It is narrated from Abu Juhaifa that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) planted his staff, then gave the call to prayer (adhan), and put his fingers in his ears. I saw that he turned while giving the adhan. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith of Sufyan Thawri (mentioned above) is more authentic.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1231 to 1233) From these hadiths, evidence is found for turning the face to the right and left while saying «حي على الصلاة» and «حي على الفلاح» in the call to prayer (adhan), and for inserting the fingers into the ears, which is recommended (mustahabb) but not obligatory (wajib).
