It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that two men from Iraq came to him and asked him about performing ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Jumu’ah, whether it is obligatory. So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied to them that whoever performs ghusl, it is better and more purifying. And soon I will tell you how the command for ghusl (on the day of Jumu’ah) began. In the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), people were needy and poor. They used to wear woolen clothes and would carry water on their backs to irrigate their date palms, and the Prophet’s Mosque was small and its roof was not high. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out from his house on a very hot summer day on the day of Jumu’ah, and his pulpit was also small, only three steps. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people, and the people began to sweat in their woolen clothes, and the mixed smell of wool and sweat spread among them, to the extent that they became a source of discomfort to one another. Until their odor reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing on the pulpit. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O people, when this day comes, perform ghusl, and whoever among you has good perfume or oil, let him apply it.”
