جماع أبواب صلاة التطوع قاعداChapters on Voluntary Prayers while Sitting
(555) بَابُ ذِكْرِ الدَّلِيلِ عَلَى أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يُكْثِرُ مِنَ التَّطَوُّعِ جَالِسًا وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِهِ مَرَضٌ بَعْدَمَا أَسَنَّ وَحَطَمَهُ النَّاسُThe chapter on the evidence that the Prophet increased voluntary prayers while sitting after old age, even without illness
Hadith 1240
حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، نَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، نَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَمَا دَخَلَ فِي السِّنِّ ، فَإِذَا بَقِيَ مِنَ السُّورَةِ ثَلاثُونَ أَوْ أَرْبَعُونَ آيَةً قَامَ فَقَرَأَهَا ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ " غَيْرَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لا يُقْرَأُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ صَلاةِ اللَّيْلِ جَالِسًا حَتَّى إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي السِّنِّ "
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after becoming old, used to pray while sitting. Then, when about thirty or forty verses of the surah remained, he (peace be upon him) would stand up and recite those verses, then go into bowing (ruku). Whereas in the narration of Ali bin Hujr (may Allah have mercy on him), the words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite while sitting in the Tahajjud prayer until his age increased (then he would recite while sitting)."
