Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to observe i'tikaf. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked his permission to observe i'tikaf with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted her permission, so Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had her tent set up. Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) also asked his permission to observe i'tikaf with him. When Lady Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) saw this, she too had her tent set up; she was a woman of strong temperament. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the tents of these women, he inquired: "Did these women intend righteousness through this?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) abandoned the i'tikaf, and when the month of Ramadan had passed, he observed i'tikaf for twenty (20) days in the month of Shawwal.
