´It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Yasar, from Qutailah, a woman from Juhainah, that a Jew came to the Prophet and said:` "You are setting up rivals (to Allah) and associating others (with Him). You say: 'Whatever Allah wills and you will,' and you say: 'By the Ka'bah.'" So the Prophet commanded them, if they wanted to swear an oath, to say: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah;" and to say: "Whatever Allah wills, then what you will."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The Ka'bah is a created entity, and it is not permissible to swear an oath by a created being. Similarly, associating the will of anyone else with the will of Allah Ta'ala is also impermissible. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught the correct words in their place: instead of swearing by the Ka'bah, one should swear by the Lord of the Ka'bah, and instead of saying "if you will" (shi'ta) alone, one should say "then if you will" (thumma shi'ta)—that is, the will of anyone other than Allah should be considered subordinate to and subsequent to the will (mashiyyah) of Allah Ta'ala.
(2) It is evident from the hadith that shirk (associating partners with Allah) was a well-known crime in Judaism and Christianity as well, and they were aware of its harms. Yet, despite this awareness, they still fell into it.
