Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair used to say that in the case of intentional murder (qatl-e-amd), the blood money (diyat) is not upon the 'aqilah (the male relatives of the murderer), rather it is upon the person of the murderer himself. The 'aqilah is responsible for the blood money in the case of accidental killing (khata). ('Aqilah means those who pay on behalf of someone.)
