بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْإِحْدَادِWhat is Reported Regarding Mourning
Hadith 1248

وَحَدَّثَنِي، عَنْ مَالِك، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ وَهِيَ حَادٌّ عَلَى أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، وَقَدْ جَعَلَتْ عَلَى عَيْنَيْهَا صَبِرًا، فَقَالَ : " مَا هَذَا يَا أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ؟ " فَقَالَتْ : إِنَّمَا هُوَ صَبِرٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ : " اجْعَلِيهِ فِي اللَّيْلِ، وَامْسَحِيهِ بِالنَّهَارِ " .
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went to Lady Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, and she was in mourning for her husband Abu Salamah. She had applied aloes to her eyes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: "O Umm Salamah! What is this you have applied?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! This is aloes." He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Apply it at night and wipe it off during the day."
قَالَ مَالِكٌ : تُحِدُّ الْأَمَةُ إِذَا تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا شَهْرَيْنِ وَخَمْسَ لَيَالٍ، مِثْلَ عِدَّتِهَا .
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that when a slave woman's husband dies, she should observe mourning for two months and five days.
. قَالَ مَالِكٌ : لَيْسَ عَلَى أُمِّ الْوَلَدِ إِحْدَادٌ إِذَا هَلَكَ عَنْهَا سَيِّدُهَا، وَلَا عَلَى أَمَةٍ يَمُوتُ عَنْهَا سَيِّدُهَا إِحْدَادٌ، وَإِنَّمَا الْإِحْدَادُ عَلَى ذَوَاتِ الْأَزْوَاجِ
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that when the master of an umm walad dies, she does not observe mourning, because mourning is obligatory only for those women who have husbands.
. قَالَ مَالِكٌ : الْإِحْدَادُ عَلَى الصَّبِيَّةِ الَّتِي لَمْ تَبْلُغْ الْمَحِيضَ، كَهَيْئَتِهِ عَلَى الَّتِي قَدْ بَلَغَتِ الْمَحِيضَ، تَجْتَنِبُ مَا تَجْتَنِبُ الْمَرْأَةُ الْبَالِغَةُ إِذَا هَلَكَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا .
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that if a woman is not yet of age and does not menstruate, she is like an adult woman; when her husband dies, she must observe mourning, and she must also avoid those matters which are obligatory for an adult woman to avoid.
