كتاب معرفة الصحابة رضي الله تعالى عنهم
Book of Knowing the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)
كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يُسَمَّى الْبَحْرَ لِكَثْرَةِ عِلْمِهِ .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was called "the Sea" because of the abundance of his knowledge

قال (1): وحدثنا محمد بن الصباح، حدثنا سفيان، عن ابن أبي نَجِيح، عن مجاهد قال: ما رأيتُ مثل ابن عبّاس قطُّ، ولقد مات يومَ مات وهو حبرُ هذه الأمة (2).
Mujahid states: I have never seen anyone like Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and on the day he died he was the "Hibr" (eminent scholar) of this Ummah.

(1) القائل هو محمد بن إسحاق الثقفي.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The speaker of the statement here is Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Thaqafi (Abu al-'Abbas al-Sarraj).
(2) إسناده قوي من أجل محمد بن الصباح. سفيان هو ابن عيينة، وابن أبي نجيح: هو عبد الله بن يسار.
Grading: The chain is "qawi" (strong), on account of the presence of Muhammad bin al-Sabbah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain, "Sufyan" refers to Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and "Ibn Abi Najih" refers to 'Abd Allah bin Yasar al-Makki.
وأخرجه عبد الله بن أحمد في "فضائل الصحابة" (1898)، ويعقوب بن سفيان في "المعرفة والتاريخ" 1/ 540 - 541، والطبراني في "تهذيب الآثار" 1/ 179 من طريق سفيان، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad (1898), Ya'qub bin Sufyan al-Fasawi (1/ 540-541) and al-Tabarani in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (1/ 179) narrated it through the route of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this same chain.
