Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5805M

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning Sayyiduna Suhayb: "And among the people is he who sells himself, seeking the pleasure of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 207]. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "O Abu Yahya! Your trade has been profitable." The narrator says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse to him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in it is that it is a narration of Hammad bin Salamah from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an (who is weak by agreement), from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus Ibn Sa'd narrated it from Sulayman bin Harb, from Hammad bin Salamah, and several thiqah hadith masters (huffaz) among Hammad bin Salamah's students narrated it from him in the same way, as will be explained below. The narrator "Thabit" refers to Ibn Aslam al-Bunani.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 209) narrated it, and by his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (24/ 228) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (5/ 156), from Sulayman bin Harb, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal".
Note / Clarification: In the printed editions of "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" it is written "Hammad bin Zayd", which is an error; it is corrected from the narrations of Ibn Asakir and Ibn al-Jawzi.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 209), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (1/ 182), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" 679), Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/ 151), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 341), Ibn Asakir (24/ 228) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (5/ 156) by way of Affan bin Muslim; and by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 209), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (2/ 368), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 341) and Ibn Asakir (24/ 228, and 225-229) by way of Abu Salamah Musa bin Isma'il; and by Ibn Asakir (24/ 229) by way of Hajjaj bin al-Minhal. All three of them (Affan, Abu Salamah and Hajjaj) narrate from Hammad bin Salamah, from Ali bin Zayd, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed editions of "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd", Hammad is specified as "Hammad bin Zayd", which is an error. It is corrected from the narration of Ibn Asakir and Ibn al-Jawzi, who narrated this report by way of Ibn Sa'd and there Hammad is specified as "Ibn Salamah"; and this is what is preserved (mahfuz): that the report belongs to Hammad bin Salamah.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come at number (5811) by another route from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Suhayb, as "mawsul" (connected), but its chain has some softness (lin).
