Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5055M

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battle of Badr and challenged his father Utbah to single combat. When he called his father to single combat, his sister Hind bint Utbah said (these verses in condemnation of him): "The squint-eyed one, with a gap in his front teeth and an ill omen, Abu Hudhayfah is the worst of people in the matter of religion. Did you not show gratitude to the father who raised you in childhood, until you grew into a strapping young man?"

Hadith Takhrij «إسناده ضعيف لإرساله، فأبو الزناد» [ترقيم الرساله 5055M] [ترقيم الشركة 5017]
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) The pronoun here refers back to Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi.

Grading: (1) Its chain is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Firstly, it is "mursal" (because Abu al-Zinad 'Abd Allah bin Dhakwan is a Successor); secondly, al-Waqidi is alone in narrating it, and when he narrates something alone he is not a reliable authority.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Ibn Sa'd (3/80), and from him al-Baladhuri reported it in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (9/369) via al-Waqidi.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi (8/186) narrated it via al-Husayn bin al-Faraj from al-Waqidi, mentioning Abu Hudhayfah challenging his father to single combat (biraz) and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopping him, but Hind's verses are not in it.
Reference / Source: These verses of Hind are narrated from al-Zubayr bin Bakkar in Ibn 'Asakir (70/176), but it is not stated there that she said these verses when Abu Hudhayfah challenged his father on the day of Badr.
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi reported in "al-Maghazi" (1/70) from his teachers that when 'Utbah bin Rabi'ah called for single combat, his son Abu Hudhayfah stood up to fight him, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then, when the group (of Companions) went out against him, Abu Hudhayfah helped against his father with a blow.
Note / Clarification: "al-ath'al" is a person who has an extra tooth.
Note / Clarification: "ghayr mahjun" means not crooked; it comes from "hajana", which means to bend or twist something.
