Hadith 411

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The most virtuous prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer (Tahajjud), and the most virtuous fast after the fasts of Ramadan is the fast of Allah's month, Muharram."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
The mentioned hadith establishes the virtue of the night prayer (tahajjud) and fasting in the month of Muharram.

➊ Night Prayer (Qiyam al-Layl): Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, encouraged the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to perform this prayer. “And during a part of the night, pray tahajjud as an additional act for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”
And Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, described the qualities of the believers: ﴿تَتَجَافٰی جُنُوْبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ﴾ (: As-Sajdah: 16). In another place, He said: ﴿کَانُوْا قَلِیْلًا مِنَ الَّیْلِ مَا یَهْجَعُوْنَ﴾ (: Adh-Dhariyat: 17).... “They used to sleep but little of the night.”

➋ Fasting in Muharram: In another hadith, it is narrated that Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about fasting on the Day of Ashura (i.e., the tenth of Muharram), so he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((یُکَفِّرُ السَّنَةَ الْمَاضِیَةَ)) (: Muslim, no. 1162).... “It expiates the sins of the previous year.”

In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that fasting in the month of Allah, Muharram, establishes the virtue and greatness of Muharram. This is similar to how the attribution to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, is made in ‘the House of Allah’ (Bayt Allah), ‘the She-camel of Allah’ (Naqat Allah).
