Hadith 264

The companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyiduna Sinan bin Sanah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The one who eats food and gives thanks has a reward equal to that of the fasting person who is patient."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
The virtue of a person who eats and drinks and expresses gratitude to Allah Ta'ala is being described here: he receives such reward from Allah Ta'ala as is given to the patient fasting person. The scholars say that the lowest level of expressing gratitude is that a person recites "Bismillah" when beginning to eat, and if he forgets, then in the middle he should recite "Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" as mentioned in the hadith.
And after finishing the meal, he should praise and glorify Allah Ta'ala, the best way of which is to recite those supplications that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught us, such as: «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا» [بخاري : 5458]
"All praise is for Allah, very pure and blessed. It has not sufficed (i.e., this food is not such that there will be no need for it in the future), nor has it been bid farewell (i.e., may this not be the last meal of our life), and O our Lord! It cannot be dispensed with."
«الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا الطَّعَامَ، وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ» "All praise is for Allah who fed me this food and granted it to me without any power or effort from myself."
The highest level of gratitude is that one not only praises and glorifies Allah but also lives one's life within the bounds of the Shari'ah, obeying and submitting to Allah and His Messenger. It is worth pondering that in the aforementioned hadith, the virtue of the lowest level of gratitude has been mentioned, whereas the virtue of the highest level of gratitude is far greater than this.
