وأنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُكْرَمٍ، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، أنا. نا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «الْحَرْبُ خُدْعَةٌ»
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "War is deception."
Brief Explanation
Explanation - "War is the name of stratagem." This means that in war, manpower, abundance of weapons, or bravery are not as effective and beneficial as stratagem is. In today's refined language, this can also be called "strategy." It is the marvel of this stratagem or strategy that even the largest armies of the enemy are forced to flee the battlefield. In other words, stratagem is an important weapon of war or a fundamental pillar of warfare. As it is mentioned in a hadith: «الحج عرفة» "Hajj is (standing at) ‘Arafah." [نسائي: 3047]
That is, just as standing at ‘Arafah is the most essential pillar of Hajj, without which Hajj cannot be complete, similarly, stratagem is also an important weapon and part of war—without it, war can never be won.
