Hadith 1281

Qais bin Sa’d narrates: I said to my father: I was present in that army which was called the Army of Leaves. People were afflicted with hunger, so my father said to me: You should sacrifice. I replied: I will sacrifice. Then people faced severe hunger, so my father said to me: You should sacrifice! I replied: I will sacrifice. Then people faced hunger again, so my father said to me: You should sacrifice, so I replied: I have been forbidden from this (by the commander of the army).

Hadith Commentary:
Later, it was considered that if all the camels were slaughtered in this manner, then how would the journey continue?
Therefore, the slaughtering of the camels was stopped, but Allah arranged sustenance for the army through the fish.

Hadith Commentary:

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that when Qays ibn Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu saw the people's hunger, he said:
“Is there anyone who can give me a camel here, and when I reach Madinah I will repay him with dates?” A man from the tribe of Juhaynah said, “Who are you?” He stated his lineage, so the Juhani said, “I have recognized you.” Then he bought five camels in exchange for five wasq of dates. Then a group of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum bore witness for him, but ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu stopped them because Qays ibn Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu did not possess any wealth of his own.
A Bedouin taunted, “Can a father not sacrifice a few wasq of dates for his son?” Hearing this taunt, his father, Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah radi Allahu anhu, gifted him four orchards.
Each orchard produced at least fifty wasq of dates.
When he returned to Madinah after this expedition and the generosity of Qays radi Allahu anhu was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he said:
“Generosity is the hallmark of this household.”
(Fath al-Bari: 8/102)

In any case, in this hadith is the account of the generosity and openhandedness of Qays ibn Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah radi Allahu anhu, who, in such circumstances, slaughtered several camels and fed the army, until finally the commander of the army stopped him, lest the camels be depleted and difficulties arise during the journey.
And Allah knows best.
