Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) a gold ring, silk, and a red saddlecloth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "An 'abd mukatab, that is, a slave with whom the master has made an agreement for freedom upon payment of a specified amount, becomes entitled to the same proportion of blood money as the amount he has paid."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an army and appointed an Ansari as their commander. He lit a fire and said, "Enter this fire." The people were just considering jumping into it when a young man said, "It is from this very fire that we have fled and taken refuge with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So the entire incident was reported to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to those who intended to enter it, "If you had entered it once, you would never have come out of it again." And praising the others, he said: "There is no obedience to anyone in disobedience to Allah. Obedience is only in good deeds."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: "What is your opinion regarding this surplus wealth that has remained with us?" The people said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Because of us, you have been kept away from your family, your business, and your trade, so you should keep it." He asked me: "What is your opinion?" I said: "The people have already given you their advice." He said: "You too should give some opinion." I said: "Why are you turning your certainty into doubt?" He said: "You yourself explain your statement." I said: "Very well, I will certainly explain it. You may remember that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent you to collect charity and zakat. You came to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he refused to give zakat. There was some dispute between you two. You said to me: 'Come with me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).' We went there, but we did not see the usual cheerfulness in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so we returned. The next day, when we went again, we found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cheerful. Then you informed him about Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said to you: 'Do you not know that a man's uncle is in the position of his father?' Then we asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his state on the first day and the second day. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When you both came to me the first day, I had two dinars of zakat left with me. That is why you saw me in a heavy mood. And when you both came to me today, I had already given them to someone, and that is why you found me cheerful.' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), after hearing this from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), said: 'You have spoken the truth. By Allah! I will remain grateful to you in this world and the Hereafter.'"

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that upon facing any hardship or affliction, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me this supplication, whose translation is: There is no deity except Allah, He is Most Forbearing and Most Merciful. Allah is free from every defect and imperfection. The Being of Allah is greatly blessed, He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne, and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Whoever, while performing ghusl in the state of major impurity, leaves even an area equal to a single hair where water does not reach, Allah the Exalted will deal with him in such and such a manner in Hell. From that very moment, I developed enmity with my hair.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried in seven garments.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say the opening takbeer (takbeer-e-tahreema), after reciting the thana, he would say: "I have turned my face, being completely devoted and as a Muslim, towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, and I am not among the polytheists. My prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. He has no partner. I have been commanded this, and I am among the Muslims. O Allah! You are the true King, there is no deity except You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sins, so forgive all my sins, for none forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to the best of character except You, and keep me away from bad character, for none can keep me away from it except You. You are Most Blessed and Most Exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance."

When he would go into ruku (bowing), he would say: "O Allah! I have bowed for You, I have believed in You, I have submitted to You. My hearing, my sight, my mind, my bones, and my tendons are all humbled before You."

When he would rise from ruku, after saying «سمع الله لمن حمده» and «ربنا ولك الحمد», he would say: "All praise is for You, which fills the heavens, the earth, and whatever is between them, and whatever else You will to fill."

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go into sajdah (prostration), he would say: "O Allah! I have prostrated for You, I have believed in You, I have submitted to You. My face has prostrated before the One who created it and fashioned it well, and gave it hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators."

And when he would turn for salam (ending the prayer), he would say: "O Allah! Forgive all my past and future sins, my hidden and apparent sins, and whatever I have transgressed, and whatever You know better than me. You are the First and the Last, and there is no deity except You."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) once submitted in the court of the Messenger, "O Messenger of Allah! Please tell me, if after you a boy is born to me, can I name him after you and give him your kunyah?" He replied, "Yes!" This was a permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned to me that only a hypocrite can bear hatred towards you, and only a believer can love you.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to carefully examine the eyes and ears of the sacrificial animals to ensure that there is no defect in them.

It is narrated from Marwan bin Hakam that once we were walking with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when a person was seen reciting the Talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who is this? The people informed him that it was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Are you not aware that I have issued an order prohibiting this? He replied: Of course, but I cannot leave the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the sake of your statement.

A man asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about the sacrifice of a cow. He replied that one cow suffices for seven people. The man asked, "What if its horn is broken?" He replied, "There is no harm." He asked, "What if it is lame?" He replied, "If it can walk to the place of sacrifice by itself, then slaughter it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to carefully examine the animal's eyes and ears.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people will emerge, among them there will be a man with a deformed limb. If you do not exceed the limits, I will tell you the promise that Allah has made, through the tongue of the Prophet, to those who kill them." The narrator says: I asked him, "Did you really hear any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this?" He replied three times, "Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a slave woman of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) committed the sin of fornication. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to carry out the prescribed punishment on her. When I reached her, her bleeding had not yet stopped. I informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When her bleeding stops, then carry out the prescribed punishment on her. And remember! Carry out the prescribed punishments on your slaves as well."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My opinion was that for «مسح على الخفين», the part of the socks that touches the ground is more appropriate (to wipe over) than the part that remains on top of the foot, until I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us from mating donkeys with horses.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to appoint anyone as a leader without consulting the Muslims, I would appoint Ibn Umm Abd, that is, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that marks had appeared on her hands from grinding flour. During this time, some captives came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from somewhere. When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) found out, she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a request for a servant, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not there, so she returned. At night, when we had laid down on our beds, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. I wanted to stand up, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay in your place." Saying this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat with us until I felt the coolness of his feet, and he said: "Shall I not tell you something that is better for you than a servant? When you lie down on your bed, say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he addressed his companion Abu’l-Hayyaj Asadi and said: I am sending you for the task for which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me. He commanded me to level every grave and to obliterate every idol.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Surah Al-A'la was very beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that three men came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them said: O Messenger of Allah! I had one hundred dinars, out of which I gave ten dinars in charity. The second said: O Messenger of Allah! I had ten dinars, and I gave one dinar in charity. The third said: I had one dinar, and I gave a tenth of it in charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All of you will receive equal reward, because all of you have given a tenth of your wealth in charity."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the palms and feet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were full and the joints of his bones were strong.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When two parties come to you, do not judge by listening to only one of them, rather listen to both."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was neither very tall nor very short, his blessed head was large and his beard was thick, his palms and feet were full, there was a tinge of redness in his blessed face, from his chest to his navel there was a long line of hair, the joints of his bones were very strong, when he walked he took small steps, it seemed as if he was descending from a slope, I have not seen anyone like him before or after him, peace and blessings be upon him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Chosroes sent a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) accepted it. Similarly, Caesar sent a gift and he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it as well, and when other kings sent gifts, he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted those too.

Shuraih bin Hani says that I asked Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over the socks, so she said: "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he has more knowledge about this issue because he used to accompany the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during travels." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The traveler is permitted to wipe over the socks for three days and three nights, and the resident for one day and one night.'"

The previous narration is also reported through this second chain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took gold in his right hand and silk in his left hand, and raising both hands, said: "These two things are forbidden for the men of my ummah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say at the end of Witr: «اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ.» "O Allah! I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot encompass praise of You; You are as You have praised Yourself."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade anyone from raising his voice while reciting (the Qur'an) between Maghrib and Isha.

Ali bin Rabi’ah says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a riding animal was brought to him for him to mount. When he placed his foot in its stirrup, he said “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). When he sat on it, he recited this supplication: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ» “All praise is for Allah. Glory be to Him Who has subjected this (animal) to us, for we could not have subdued it (by ourselves), and surely to our Lord we are returning.” Then he said “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for Allah) three times and “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest) three times, and then said: «سُبْحَانَكَ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ قَدْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي» “O Allah! You are pure, there is no deity except You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” Then he smiled. I asked, “O Commander of the Faithful! What made you smile at this moment?” He replied, “I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do as I have done, and he also smiled. I asked him the reason, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘When the servant says: O Lord! Forgive me, the Lord is pleased and says: My servant knows that none forgives sins except Me.’”

Abdullah bin Yasar says that once Amr bin Harith came to visit Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have come to visit Hasan in his illness, but what about that which you are hiding in your heart?" Amr said: "You are not my Lord that you may do as you wish with my heart." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Even so, we will not refrain from advising you. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When a Muslim visits his sick Muslim brother, Allah appoints seventy thousand angels for him who pray for his forgiveness every moment of the day until evening, and if he goes in the evening, they pray for him every moment of the night until morning.'"

Amr bin Harith asked: "What is your opinion about walking with a funeral? Should one walk in front of the funeral or behind it?" He replied: "Walking behind the funeral is superior to walking in front of it, just as the virtue of offering obligatory prayer in congregation is superior to offering it alone." Amr said: "But I myself have seen Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with them both) walking in front of the funeral." He replied: "Both of them did not want to cause hardship to the people because of themselves."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a silk garment was sent as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from somewhere. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent it to me. I wore it and went outside, but when I saw signs of displeasure on the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I distributed it among my women.

Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prevent people from performing Hajj Tamattu', and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the fatwa of its permissibility. On one occasion, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) must have said something to him, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you even know that we performed Hajj Tamattu' with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), yet you prevent it?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What you say is correct, but we fear (that people will go to their wives at night and in the morning will be wet from the water of janabah bath and will enter into the state of ihram for Hajj)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding an infant boy: "Sprinkling water over the urine of a boy is sufficient, and if a girl's urine gets on something, it should be washed." Qatadah says that this ruling is until they start eating and drinking, and when they start eating and drinking, then whatever their urine touches must be washed in both cases.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No person can be a complete believer until he believes in four things: he bears witness that there is no deity except Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah, He has sent me as a true Prophet, he believes in being raised after death, and he believes in destiny."

Once, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the death of Abu Talib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and hide him in a pit." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted that he died in a state of polytheism (how can I lower him into the grave?). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "Go and hide him in a pit." When I had lowered him into a pit and returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to me: "Go and take a bath."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once ordered me to sell two slaves; they were brothers to each other. I sold them to two different men, and then came and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Go back and return them, and sell both of them together to one man." (So that there remains some closeness and affection between them.)

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Witr does not have definitive proof from the Noble Qur’an like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
