Musnad Ahmad

Abdullah bin Haneen says that once I was at the place of Abwa with Hazrat Ibn Abbas and Miswar (may Allah be pleased with them). We were talking when the topic of cooling oneself while in the state of Ihram came up. Hazrat Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) denied its permissibility, while Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) allowed it. Then Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) with this message: "Your nephew Abdullah bin Abbas sends you greetings and asks how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to wash his head while in the state of Ihram?" Abdullah bin Haneen reached there and found Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) bathing with a cloth curtain hanging between the two sides of a well. When I asked him for clarification, he wrapped a cloth around his chest and put his face out. I saw that a man was pouring water over his head. Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) indicated with his hands over his entire head and moved his hands forward and backward. Upon learning this, Hazrat Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), "From now on, I will never differ with you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you goes to the toilet, he should not face the Qiblah, rather he should turn towards the east or the west. But when we reached Syria, we found that the toilets there were built facing the Qiblah, so we would turn our faces away while sitting in them and seek forgiveness.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hasten to perform the Maghrib prayer at the time of breaking the fast and before the stars appear.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Four things are the practices of all the prophets: applying perfume, marriage, using the miswak, and applying henna.

Marthad bin Abdullah Yazni (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in our place, Egypt, the companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), came for jihad. At that time, Hazrat Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed our leader as Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him). One day, Hazrat Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) delayed the Maghrib prayer. After completing the prayer, Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and said, "O Uqbah! Did you see the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performing the Maghrib prayer like this? Did you not hear the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying that my Ummah will remain upon goodness as long as they do not delay the Maghrib prayer until the stars appear?"

Amr bin Maymoon (RA) narrates that whoever recites these words ten times: "La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulk wa lahul hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer," it is as if he has freed four slaves from among the descendants of Ismail.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not lawful for a Muslim to sever relations with his brother for more than three days; when they meet, one turns his face this way and the other that way, and the better of the two is the one who greets first.

Dawud bin Abi Salih says that one day Marwan was passing by when he saw a man with his face placed on a grave (on the blessed chamber of the Prophet, peace be upon him). He said, "Do you know what you are doing?" The man turned towards him, and it was Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, "Yes! I have come to the Prophet (peace be upon him); I have not come to a stone. I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: 'Do not weep for the religion when its people are its caretakers, but weep for it when the unworthy become its caretakers.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Going out in the way of Allah for a morning or an evening is better than all those things upon which the sun rises or sets.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you sneezes, he should say "Alhamdulillah ala kulli haal" and the one who replies should say "Yarhamuk Allah" and the one who sneezed should say "Yahdikum Allah wa yuslihu balakum."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade using animals as targets. Therefore, even if I have a chicken, I will not tie it up and use it as a target.

Ibn Ta'li says that we participated in jihad with Abdur Rahman bin Khalid, and four wild donkeys captured from the enemy were brought. He ordered, and all four were tied up and killed with arrows. When this reached Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) forbid killing animals while they are tied up.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit killing an animal after tying it up.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to be in his tent when a jinn woman would come and grab him. He complained about this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now when you see her, say this: 'Bismillah, respond to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).'" So, the next time she came, he said this to her and caught her. She promised that she would not come to him again, so he let her go and went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "What did your captive do?" He replied, "I caught her, but she promised that she would not come again, so I let her go." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "She will come again." So, I caught her two or three times, and each time she said that she would not come again. Finally, one time she said, "Let me go this time, I will teach you something; if you say it, nothing will come near you." And that is Ayat al-Kursi. Then he went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him this. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "She spoke the truth, although she is a liar."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Abu Zubyan says that Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) participated in the jihad against Rome. He became ill, and when the time of his death approached, he said: "When I die, convey my greetings to the people on my behalf and inform them that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah, Allah will admit him into Paradise.' And keep carrying me forward, and as far as possible, keep taking me further into the land of Rome."

Asim bin Sufyan Thaqafi says that he participated in the Battle of Dhat al-Salasil. On that occasion, there was no actual fighting, but fortification became necessary. Then, when they came to Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) and Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) were also present there. Asim said, "O Abu Ayyub! This year we missed out on jihad, and we have been told that whoever prays in the mosque will have his sins forgiven." He replied, "Nephew! Shall I not tell you something even easier than that? I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever performs ablution according to the prescribed manner and prays according to the prescribed manner, all his past sins will be forgiven." Uqbah, is it so? He replied, "Yes!"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Keep your need in mind and perform ablution thoroughly and properly, and pray as much as you are able. Then praise and glorify your Lord, then make this supplication: O Allah! You have power over everything, I have no power; You have knowledge, I have no knowledge, and You are the Knower of the unseen. If You know that there is goodness for me in this matter in terms of my religion, my worldly life, and my Hereafter, then decree it for me; and if there is goodness for me in another matter in terms of my religion, my worldly life, and my Hereafter, then decree that for me.
