حَدِیث معَاوِیَةَ بنِ اَبِی سفیَانَ
Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan
Hadith 16907
حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ثَوْرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَكَانَ قَلِيلَ الْحَدِيثِ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " كُلُّ ذَنْبٍ عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَهُ ، إِلَّا الرَّجُلُ يَمُوتُ كَافِرًا ، أَوْ الرَّجُلُ يَقْتُلُ مُؤْمِنًا مُتَعَمِّدًا "
Abu Adrees says that I heard Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated very few hadiths, saying: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: It is hoped that Allah Almighty will forgive every sin, except for the one who dies in a state of disbelief or the person who deliberately kills a Muslim.
Hadith 16908
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَر ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ حُمْرَانَ بْنَ أَبَانَ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : إِنَّكُمْ لَتُصَلُّونَ صَلَاةً لَقَدْ صَحِبْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَا رَأَيْنَاهُ يُصَلِّيهَا ، وَلَقَدْ نَهَى عَنْهُمَا ، يَعْنِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that you people perform such a prayer that, despite the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we did not see him performing this prayer; rather, he used to forbid it. What is meant are the two (nafl) rak‘ahs after ‘Asr (which he saw some people performing).
Hadith 16909
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ الْهُنَائِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَعِنْدَهُ جَمْعٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ مُعَاوِيَةُ : أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ رُكُوبِ جُلُودِ النُّمُورِ " ؟ قَالُوا : نَعَمْ قَالَ : قَالَ : أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ " ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ : قَالَ : أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى أَنْ يُشْرَبَ فِي آنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ " ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ : قَالَ : أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ إِلَّا مُقَطَّعًا " ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ : قَالَ : أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ جَمْعٍ بَيْنَ حَجٍّ وَعُمْرَةٍ " ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُمَّ لَا ، قَالَ : فَوَاللَّهِ إِنَّهَا لَمَعَهُنَّ .
Abu Shaykh Hanai says: I was once sitting with Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in a gathering of some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: I ask you by Allah’s oath, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing silk? They replied: Yes! Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I also bear witness to this. Then he said: I ask you by oath, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade men from wearing gold except a little? They replied: Yes. Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I also bear witness to this. Then he said: I ask you by Allah’s oath, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade riding on a leopard? They replied: Yes! He said: I also bear witness to this. Then he said: I ask you by Allah’s oath, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking water from silver vessels? They replied: Yes! He said: I also bear witness to this. Then he said: I ask you by Allah’s oath, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade combining Hajj and Umrah in one journey? They replied: We do not know this matter. Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This matter is also established and is with the previous matters.
Hadith 16910
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْيَحْصَبِيِّ ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ يُحَدِّثُ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : إِيَّاكُمْ وَأَحَادِيثَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا حَدِيثًا كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ عُمَرَ ، وَإِنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ أَخَافَ النَّاسَ فِي اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ يُرِدْ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُّ فِي الدِّينِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that avoid narrating many ahadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) except for those ahadith which were commonly known during the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), because Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to warn people regarding matters of Allah. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: When Allah intends good for a servant, He grants him understanding of the religion.
Hadith 16911
وَسَمِعْتُهُ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا خَازِنٌ ، وَإِنَّمَا يُعْطِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، فَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً عَنْ طِيبِ نَفْسٍ ، فَهُوَ أَنْ يُبَارَكَ لِأَحَدِكُمْ ، وَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً عَنْ شَرَهٍ ، وَشَرَهِ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، فَهُوَ كَالْآكِلِ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ "
And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I am only a treasurer, the real giver is Allah. Therefore, if I give something to a person with a happy heart, then it will be made blessed for him. And if I give something to someone to protect myself from his evil or because of his insistence in asking, then he is like the one who keeps eating but is never satisfied.
Hadith 16912
وَسَمِعْتُهُ ، يَقُولُ : " لَا تَزَالُ أُمَّةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي ظَاهِرِينَ عَلى الْحَقِّ لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ خَالَفَهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ وَهُمْ ظَاهِرُونَ عَلَى النَّاسِ "
And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A group from my Ummah will always remain upon the truth; they will not be harmed by those who oppose them, until the command of Allah comes."
Hadith 16913
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخُوَارِ ، أَنَّ نَافِعَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ أَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ابْنِ أُخْتِ نَمِرٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ رَآهُ مِنْهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، صَلَّيْتُ مَعَهُ الْجُمُعَةَ فِي الْمَقْصُورَةِ ، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قُمْتُ فِي مَقَامِي ، فَصَلَّيْتُ ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ ، فَقَالَ : لَا تَعُدْ لِمَا فَعَلْتَ ، إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْجُمُعَةَ ، فَلَا تَصِلْهَا بِصَلَاةٍ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ أَوْ تَكَلَّمَ ، فَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ بِذَلِكَ ، " أَنْ لَا تُوصَلَ صَلَاةٌ بِصَلَاةٍ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ أَوْ تَكَلَّمَ "
Sayyiduna Umar bin Ata (may Allah be pleased with him) says that once Nafi’ bin Jubair sent me to Sa’ib bin Yazid to ask him whether he had seen Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) offering prayer. He replied, “Yes! Once I offered Jumu’ah with him in the ‘Maqsurah’. When he finished the prayer with salam, I stood in my place and started offering the Sunnah prayers. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) went inside, then called me and said: ‘Do not do again what you just did. When you offer the Jumu’ah prayer, do not offer another prayer immediately after it until you have spoken or moved from your place, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that no prayer should be offered immediately after another until you have spoken or moved from your place.’”
Hadith 16914
حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ حُمْرَانَ بْنَ أَبَانَ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى أُنَاسًا يُصَلُّونَ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّكُمْ لَتُصَلُّونَ صَلَاةً قَدْ صَحِبْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَمَا رَأَيْنَاهُ يُصَلِّيهَا ، وَلَقَدْ نَهَى عَنْهَا ، يَعْنِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ

Hadith 16915
حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ مَوْلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ نَسِيَ شَيْئًا مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ ، فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Whoever forgets something in the prayer should sit and perform two prostrations.
Hadith 16916
حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْفَيْضِ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا ، فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deliberately attributes a false statement to me, let him prepare his abode in the Hellfire."
Hadith 16917
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَجْلَانَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ مَوْلَى عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ يُوسُفَ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، أَنَّهُ صَلَّى أَمَامَهُمْ فَقَامَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَعَلَيْهِ جُلُوسٌ ، فَسَبَّحَ النَّاسُ ، فَتَمَّ عَلَى قِيَامِهِ ، ثُمَّ سَجَدْ بِنَا سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ أَنْ أَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ ، ثُمَّ قَعَدَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ نَسِيَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ شَيْئًا فَلْيَسْجُدْ مِثْلَ هَاتَيْنِ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he led the prayer as an imam and instead of sitting, he stood up. The people also said «سبحان اللہ», but he completed his standing. Then after completing the prayer, while sitting, he performed two prostrations of forgetfulness, and after ascending the pulpit, he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that if a person forgets something in prayer, he should perform two prostrations in this manner while sitting.
Hadith 16918
حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبُ بْنُ الشَّهِيدِ ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ، فَقَامُوا لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَمْثُلَ لَهُ الرِّجَالُ قِيَامًا ، فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ "
Once, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) went somewhere and the people stood up out of respect for him, but Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Whoever likes that the servants of Allah should stand before him, he should make his abode in Hell.
Hadith 16919
حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ مِينَاءَ ، أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ جَارِيَةَ أخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا فِي نَفَرٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ ، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ مُعَاوِيَةُ ، فَسَأَلَهُمْ عَنْ حَدِيثِهِمْ ، فَقَالُوا : كُنَّا فِي حَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِ الْأَنْصَارِ ، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ : أَلَا أَزِيدُكُمْ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالُوا : بَلَى يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ أَحَبَّ الْأَنْصَارَ أَحَبَّهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَ الْأَنْصَارَ أَبْغَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
Yazid bin Jariyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once he was sitting with some Ansari people when Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked about the topic of discussion. The people informed him that they were talking about the Ansar. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith to increase your knowledge, which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The people said: "Certainly, O Commander of the Faithful!" He said: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever loves the Ansar, Allah loves him, and whoever harbors enmity towards the Ansar, Allah harbors enmity towards him.'"
Hadith 16920
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَكَمُ ابْنُ مِينَاءَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَارِيَةَ ، قَالَ : إِنِّي لَفِي مَجْلِسِ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، فِي نَفَرٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ ، وَنَحْنُ نَتَحَدَّثُ ، إِذْ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ ، فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 16921
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْيَحْصَبِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا خَازِنٌ ، وَإِنَّمَا يُعْطِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، فَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ ، فَإِنَّهُ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ ، وَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِشَرَهِ نَفْسٍ ، وَشَرَهِ مَسْأَلَةٍ ، فَهُوَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ فَلَا يَشْبَعُ "

Hadith 16922
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " إِذَا أَذَّنَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ قَالَ مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that when he (peace be upon him) heard the call of the muezzin, he would repeat the same phrases that he was saying.
Hadith 16923
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ فِي ظِلِّ الْكَعْبَةِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ حُلِيِّ الذَّهَبِ وَلُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ "
Abdullah bin Ali says that once I heard Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Makkah Mukarramah, under the shade of the Ka'bah, saying from the pulpit that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade men from wearing gold and silk.
Hadith 16924
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا سَمِعَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ يَقُولُ : اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ ، وَإِذَا قَالَ : أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ ، وَإِذَا قَالَ : أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that when he (peace be upon him) heard the call of the muezzin, he would repeat the same phrases that he was saying.
Hadith 16925
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْبَجَلِيِّ ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ ، يَقُولُ : مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ ، وَعُمَرُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ ، وَأَنَا ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ
Jarir says that I heard Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying during a sermon that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was sixty-three years old. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was also sixty-three years old. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was also sixty-three years old. And now I too have reached the age of sixty-three.
Hadith 16926
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ ، فَاجْلِدُوهُ ، فَإِنْ عَادَ ، فَاجْلِدُوهُ ، فَإِنْ عَادَ ، فَاجْلِدُوهُ ، فَإِنْ عَادَ فَاقْتُلُوهُ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever drinks alcohol, flog him. If he drinks again, flog him again. If he drinks a third time, flog him again. If he drinks a fourth time, then kill him."
Hadith 16927
قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ مَوْلَى أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَتَّابٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " أَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ أَدْخَلَتْ فِي شَعَرِهَا مِنْ شَعَرِ غَيْرِهَا ، فَإِنَّمَا تُدْخِلُهُ زُورًا "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Any woman who adds someone else's hair to her own hair (in order to make it appear longer), she is inserting it falsely."
Hadith 16928
قَالَ : قَالَ : وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " النَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ ، خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقِهُوا ، وَاللَّهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرَ قُرَيْشٌ لَأَخْبَرْتُهَا مَا لِخِيَارِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "In this matter (of leadership), people follow the Quraysh. In the time of ignorance, those among them who were the best are also the best in the time of Islam, provided they attain understanding (of religion). By Allah! If the Quraysh were not prone to pride, I would have informed them of the status of their best people in the sight of Allah."
Hadith 16929
قَالَ : قَالَ : وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ لَا مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَيْتَ ، وَلَا مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعْتَ ، وَلَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الْجَدِّ مِنْكَ الْجَدُّ ، مَنْ يُرِدْ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقَّهِْهُّ فِي الدِّينِ . " وَخَيْرُ نِسْوَةٍ رَكِبْنَ الْإِبِلَ ، صَالِحُ نِسَاءِ قُرَيْشٍ ، أَرْعَاهُ عَلَى زَوْجٍ فِي ذَاتِ يَدِهِ ، وَأَحْنَاهُ عَلَى وَلَدٍ فِي صِغَرِهِ " .
And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the honor of the honorable avails nothing against You. Allah, when He intends good for someone, grants him understanding of the religion. And the best women who ride camels are the righteous women of Quraysh, who are the best protectors of their husbands in themselves and the most merciful to their children in childhood.
Hadith 16930
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْعَدَوِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أخْبَرَهُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِمَكَّةَ يَقُولُ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْحَرِيرِ "

Hadith 16931
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ الْخُزَاعِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْهَادِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ يُرِدْ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقَّهِْهُّ فِي الدِّينِ ، وَلَنْ تَزَالَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةُ أُمَّةً قَائِمَةً عَلَى أَمْرِ اللَّهِ لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ خَالَفَهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ وَهُمْ ظَاهِرُونَ عَلَى النَّاسِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: When Allah intends good for a servant, He grants him understanding of the religion. And a group from my Ummah will always remain upon the truth; they will not care about those who oppose them until the command of Allah comes, and they will be dominant over the people. Upon this, Malik bin Yukhamir as-Saksaki stood up and said: O Commander of the Believers! I heard Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) say that by this are meant the people of Sham. So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his voice and said: Malik is saying that he heard Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) say that by this are meant the people of Sham.
Hadith 16932
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّ عُمَيْرَ بْنَ هَانِئٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : لَا تَزَالُ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي قَائِمَةً بِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ خَذَلَهُمْ ، أَوْ خَالَفَهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُمْ ظَاهِرُونَ عَلَى النَّاسِ " ، فَقَامَ مَالِكُ بْنُ يَخَامِرٍ السَّكْسَكِيُّ فَقَالَ : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، سَمِعْتُ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ يَقُولُ : " وَهُمْ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ " ، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ وَرَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ : هَذَا مَالِكٌ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاذًا ، يَقُولُ : " وَهُمْ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "A group from my Ummah will always remain on the truth; they will not care about those who oppose them or those who abandon them, until the command of Allah comes and they will prevail over the people." Upon this, Malik bin Yukhamir Siksaki stood up and said: O Commander of the Believers! I heard Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) say that by this are meant the people of Sham. So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his voice and said: Malik is saying that he heard Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) say that by this are meant the people of Sham.
Hadith 16933
حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ جَدِّي يُحَدِّثُ ، أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَخَذَ الْإِدَاوَةَ بَعْدَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ يَتْبَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهَا ، وَاشْتَكَى أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ، فَبَيْنَا هُوَ يُوَضِّئُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَيْهِ مَرَّةً ، أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَهُو يَتَوَضَأ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ إِنْ وُلِّيتَ أَمْرًا فَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَاعْدِلْ " ، قَالَ : فَمَا زِلْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنِّي مُبْتَلًى بِعَمَلٍ لِقَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى ابْتُلِيتُ
It is narrated that once Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) took care of him and took a vessel and went after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). While he was helping the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked up at him once or twice and said: "Muawiyah! If you are given authority, fear Allah and be just." He says that at that very moment I became certain that some responsibility would be entrusted to me, and so it happened.
Hadith 16934
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، قَالَ : قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ الْمَدِينَةَ ، وَكَانَتْ آخِرَ قَدْمَةٍ قَدِمَهَا ، فَأَخْرَجَ كُبَّةً مِنْ شَعَرٍ ، فَقَالَ : مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ أَحَدًا يَصْنَعُ هَذَا غَيْرَ الْيَهُودِ ، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَمَّاهُ الزُّورَ ، قَالَ : كَأَنَّهُ يَعْنِي الْوِصَالَ
Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once, in Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and delivered a sermon to us, in which he took out a lock of hair and showed it, and said: I think that only the Jews do this. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to know of this, he called it "falsehood."
Hadith 16935
حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَيَّاشٍ يَعْنِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، وَغَيْرِهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَرِيزٍ مَوْلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَ النَّاسَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بِحِمْصَ ، فَذَكَرَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " حَرَّمَ سَبْعَةَ أَشْيَاءَ ، وَإِنِّي أُبْلِغُكُمْ ذَلِكَ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ ، مِنْهُنَّ : النَّوْحُ ، وَالشِّعْرُ ، وَالتَّصَاوِيرُ ، وَالتَّبَرُّجُ ، وَجُلُودُ السِّبَاعِ ، وَالذَّهَبُ ، وَالْحَرِيرُ "
Once, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon before the people in "Hamees" and during his speech mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had declared seven things to be forbidden. I am conveying that message to you and I also forbid you from them: wailing, poetry, images, excessive adornment by women, the skins of predatory animals, gold, and silk.
Hadith 16936
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزَّاهِرِيَّةِ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا مُبَلِّغٌ وَاللَّهُ يَهْدِي ، وَقَاسِمٌ وَاللَّهُ يُعْطِي ، فَمَنْ بَلَغَهُ مِنِّي شَيْءٌ بِحُسْنِ رَغْبَةٍ ، وَحُسْنِ هُدًى ، فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ الَّذِي يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ ، وَمَنْ بَلَغَهُ منِّي شَيْءٌ بِسُوءِ رَغْبَةٍ ، وَسُوءِ هَدْيٍ ، فَذَاكَ الَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am only a treasurer, the real giver is Allah. Therefore, if I give something to someone with a happy heart, it will be made blessed for him. And if I give something to someone to protect myself from his evil or because of his insistence in asking, he is like the person who keeps eating but is never satisfied.
Hadith 16937
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَزْهَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْهَوْزَنِيُّ قَالَ أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ : الْحَرَازِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَامِرٍ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ لُحَيٍّ ، قَالَ : حَجَجْنَا مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ قَامَ حِينَ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابَيْنِ افْتَرَقُوا فِي دِينِهِمْ عَلَى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً ، وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً يَعْنِي الْأَهْوَاءَ ، كُلُّهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةً ، وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ ، وَإِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ تَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الْأَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلْبُ بِصَاحِبِهِ ، لَا يَبْقَى مِنْهُ عِرْقٌ وَلَا مَفْصِلٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَهُ " ، وَاللَّهِ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْعَرَبِ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَقُومُوا بِمَا جَاءَ بِهِ نَبِيُّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، لَغَيْرُكُمْ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَحْرَى أَنْ لَا يَقُومَ بِهِ
Abu Amir says that once we performed Hajj with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). When we reached Makkah Mukarramah, he stood up after offering the Zuhr prayer and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The Jews and Christians were divided into seventy-two sects in their religion, while this Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects. All of them will go to Hell except one, and that one sect will be upon the path of the group of Companions. And in my Ummah, there will also come such peoples upon whom these sects (and desires) will prevail just as a dog attacks someone, and there will not remain any vein or joint in that person in which the poison does not penetrate. By Allah! O group of Arabs! If you do not remain steadfast upon the Shariah brought by your Prophet, then others will be even less steadfast upon it."
Hadith 16938
حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ شُجَاعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي خُصَيْفٌ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، وَعَطَاءٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ أخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَصَّرَ مِنْ شَعَرِهِ بِمِشْقَصٍ " ، فَقُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : مَا بَلَغَنَا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ إِلَّا عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ؟ فَقَالَ : مَا كَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَّهَمًا
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) cut the hair of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) head with the scissors he had with him.
Hadith 16939
قَالَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَحْمَدَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بَشَارٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُؤَمَّلٌ ، وَأَبُو أَحْمَدَ ، أو أحدهما عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَصَّرَ بِمِشْقَصٍ "
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) cut the hair of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) head with the scissors he had with him.
