Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went for Hajj. There, in view of specific circumstances, he wanted to deliver a sermon, but Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him that at this time, a large number of the weaker section of people are present; you should postpone your sermon until you return to Madinah Munawwarah (because the people there are wise, they will understand your words, whereas these people may not understand properly and may cause unrest). Thus, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to Madinah Munawwarah, one day I went near the pulpit and heard him saying: Some people say, "What is the status of Rajm (stoning)? In the Book of Allah, only the punishment of lashes is mentioned." Whereas the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also enforced the punishment of Rajm, and after him, we also did so. And if people did not say that Umar has added something to the Book of Allah which is not in it, I would have written the verse of this ruling on the margin of the Noble Qur'an.
