حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ ، ذَاكَ اللَّخْمِيُّ ، عَن أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، اشْدُدْ عَلَيْكَ سِلَاحَكَ وَثِيَابَكَ وَأْتِنِي " ، فَفَعَلْتُ فَجِئْتُهُ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ ، فَصَعَّدَ فِيَّ الْبَصَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَبْعَثَكَ وَجْهًا ، فَيُسَلِّمَكَ اللَّهُ وَيُغْنِمَكَ ، وَأَرْعَبُ لَكَ مِنَ الْمَالِ رَعْبَةً صَالِحَةً " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي لَمْ أُسْلِمْ رَغْبَةً فِي الْمَالِ ، إِنَّمَا أَسْلَمْتُ رَغْبَةً فِي الْجِهَادِ وَالْكَيْنُونَةِ مَعَكَ . قَالَ : " يَا عَمْرُو ، نَعِمَّا بِالْمَالِ الصَّالِحِ لِلرَّجُلِ الصَّالِحِ " . قَالَ كَذَا فِي النُّسْخَةِ نَعِمَّا بِنَصْبِ النُّونِ وَكَسْرِ الْعَيْنِ ، قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ بِكَسْرِ النُّونِ وَالْعَيْنِ.
It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to me to come to him dressed in my clothes and armed. When I presented myself, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me from head to toe, then lowered his gaze and said, "It is my intention to appoint you as the commander of an army and send you forth. May Allah return you safe and with spoils of war, and I desire good wealth for you." I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) I did not accept Islam for the sake of wealth and riches. I accepted Islam with heartfelt desire and for the purpose that I may attain the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "How excellent is lawful wealth for a righteous man."
