حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ . ح وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُلَيَّةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَأَقْدَمُهُمْ قِرَاءَةً ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَكْبَرُهُمْ سِنًّا ، وَلَا يُؤَمَّنَّ الرَّجُلُ فِي سُلْطَانِهِ " ، قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ : " وَلَا فِي أَهْلِهِ وَلَا يُجْلَسُ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ " ، قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ : " فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ أَوْ يَأْذَنَ لَكَ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The one who should lead the people in prayer is the one among them who is the best reciter of the Qur'an and has the most knowledge of recitation. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who migrated first should lead. If they are also equal in migration, then the oldest among them should lead. No one should lead in another person's house or authority, and likewise, no one should sit in a place of honor in someone else's house except with his permission."
