It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he himself or another man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling regarding a lost sheep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should take it, for either you will find it or the wolf will take it." The questioner asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling if a lost camel is found?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became extremely angry, so much so that his blessed cheeks turned red, and he said: "What do you have to do with it? It has its water bag and its shoes with it, and it can eat the leaves of the trees." Then the questioner asked: "O Messenger of Allah! If I find silver in a pouch, what do you say?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep its container, its tie, and its number well preserved, and announce it for a year. If its owner comes during that time, hand it over to him; otherwise, it becomes yours."
