It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qabeesah that once I took the responsibility of paying off someone’s debt, and in this regard, I went to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) with a request for assistance. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: We will pay this debt on your behalf and will take out that amount from the animals of charity. Then he said: Qabeesah, except for three situations, asking (begging) is not permissible in any case. The first is the person who becomes a guarantor for someone’s debt; for him, asking is permissible until he pays off that debt, then he should refrain from asking. The second is the person who is so needy that he is afflicted by hunger, and three trustworthy men from his people testify to his need or destitution; for him, too, asking is permissible until he finds some means of livelihood, then he should refrain from asking. And the third is the person upon whom a sudden calamity befalls and all his wealth is destroyed; for him, too, asking is permissible until he finds some means of livelihood, then he should refrain from asking. In any other case, asking is forbidden.
