It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Who among you has attended a funeral today?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Has anyone among you visited a sick person?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "I have." Then he asked, "Has anyone given charity?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again presented himself. Then he asked, "Has anyone fasted today?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "I have fasted." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said twice, "It has become obligatory."
