Hadith 2942

Ibn Buraida narrated to us, he said: ‘Aamir bin Shurahbil Sha’bi, who belonged to the tribe of Sha’b Hamdan, narrated to me, he asked the sister of Dhahhak bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), Lady Fatima bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her), who was among the earliest emigrants, to narrate to him a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which she had heard directly from him. She said: “Alright, if you wish, I will narrate it.” He said: “Yes, narrate it.” Lady Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “I was married to Ibn Mughirah, and he was among the best young men of Quraysh at that time. Then he was martyred in the first battle with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When I became a widow, ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came with some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and proposed marriage to me. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a proposal for his freed slave Usamah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him). And I had heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): ‘Whoever loves me should also love Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him).’ When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to me about this, I said: ‘The matter is in your hands, O Messenger of Allah, marry me to whomever you wish.’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Go to the house of Umm Sharik.’ Umm Sharik was a wealthy woman among the Ansar and used to spend a lot in the way of Allah, and guests would stay with her. I said: ‘Very well, I will go to Umm Sharik.’ Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Do not go to Umm Sharik, for many guests come to her, and I dislike that your veil may fall or your shins become uncovered and people see from your body what you would dislike. Go to your cousin ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr ibn Umm Maktum, who was from Banu Fihr, a branch of Quraysh, and Lady Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) was also from that tribe.’ Then Lady Fatima said: ‘So I went to his house. When my waiting period (‘iddah) was over, I heard the voice of a caller, and it was the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), calling: ‘Gather for prayer.’ I also went out towards the mosque and prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I was in the row in which the women were behind the people. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he sat on the pulpit and was smiling. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Let everyone remain in his place of prayer.’ Then he said: ‘Do you know why I have gathered you?’ The companions said: ‘Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) know best.’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘By Allah, I have not gathered you to encourage or to frighten you, but rather because Tamim Dari, who was a Christian, came, pledged allegiance, became Muslim, and narrated to me a hadith which agrees with what I used to tell you about the Dajjal. He narrated that he (i.e., Tamim) boarded a ship with thirty men from the tribes of Lakhm and Judham. The sea waves played with them for a month. Then they landed on the shore of an island towards the setting sun. They boarded a small boat and entered the island. There they met a beast with a thick tail, very hairy, so much so that its front and back could not be distinguished due to the abundance of hair. The people said to it: ‘Woe to you, what are you?’ It said: ‘I am a spy.’ The people said: ‘What is a spy?’ It said: ‘Go to that man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know your news.’ Tamim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘When it mentioned the man, we were afraid of it, lest it be a devil. Tamim said: ‘Then we hurriedly entered the monastery. There we saw a man of great stature, the likes of whom we had never seen, and he was bound very tightly. His hands were tied to his neck, and his legs were shackled from the knees to the ankles with iron. We said: ‘Woe to you, what are you?’ He said: ‘You have come to know about me, now tell me about yourselves, who are you?’ The people said: ‘We are Arabs, we boarded a ship, but when we set sail, we found the sea in turmoil, and the waves played with us for a month. Then we landed on this island, boarded a small boat, and entered the island. We met a beast with a thick tail and very hairy, so much so that we could not distinguish its front from its back due to the abundance of hair. We said to it: ‘Woe to you, what are you?’ It said: ‘I am a spy.’ We said: ‘What is a spy?’ It said: ‘Go to that man in the monastery, for he is very eager to know your news.’ So we hurried to you, fearing it might be a demon.’ Then that man said: ‘Tell me about the date palms of Baisan.’ We said: ‘What do you want to know about them?’ He said: ‘I am asking about their fruiting, do they bear fruit?’ We said: ‘Yes, they bear fruit.’ He said: ‘Be informed, soon they will not bear fruit.’ He said: ‘Tell me about the lake of Tabariyyah (Tiberias).’ We said: ‘What do you want to know about it?’ He said: ‘Is there water in it?’ The people said: ‘There is plenty of water in it.’ He said: ‘Indeed, its water will soon dry up.’ Then he said: ‘Tell me about the spring of Zughar.’ The people said: ‘What do you want to know about it?’ He said: ‘Is there water in that spring, and do the people irrigate their crops with it?’ We said: ‘Yes, there is plenty of water in it, and the people irrigate their crops with it.’ He said: ‘Tell me about the Prophet of the unlettered (Ummiyeen), what has he done?’ The people said: ‘He has come out from Makkah and settled in Madinah.’ He said: ‘Did the Arabs fight him?’ We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘How did he deal with them?’ We said: ‘He prevailed over those Arabs around him, and they obeyed him.’ He said: ‘Has it really happened?’ We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Be informed, it is better for them to obey him. And now I tell you about myself: I am the Messiah (Dajjal), and the time is near when I will be permitted to come out. When I am allowed, I will travel and will not leave any town except that I will enter it within forty nights, except Makkah and Taybah (Madinah), for they are forbidden to me. Whenever I try to enter either of them, an angel with a drawn sword will confront me and prevent me from entering, and there will be angels guarding every path of them.’ Lady Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck the pulpit with his staff and said: ‘This is Taybah, this is Taybah, this is Taybah,’ meaning Madinah. Beware! Have I not told you about this before?’ The companions said: ‘Yes.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I liked the story of Tamim (may Allah be pleased with him) because it agrees with what I have told you about the Dajjal, Madinah, and Makkah. Beware! He is in the sea of Sham or Yemen? No, rather he is in the east, he is in the east, he is in the east (to the east is the Indian Ocean, perhaps Dajjal is on an island in the Indian Ocean), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the east.’ Lady Fatima bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘I have remembered this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).’

Al-Sha'bi reported: We visited Fatima bin Qais and she served us fresh dates which are called rutab and she also served us barley. I asked her about that woman in whose case three divorces had been pronounced as to how much time she should count as the waiting period. She said: My husband pronounced three divorces in my case and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) permitted me to spend any waiting period in my family. (It was during this period) that announcement was made for the people to observe prayer in the bigger Mosque. I went there along with people and I was in the front row meant for women and it was adjacent to the last row of men and I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) deliver sermon sitting on the pulpit. He said: The cousin of Tamim (Dari) sailed in the ocean. The rest of the hadith is the same but with this addition: "(I see) as if I am looking to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) pointing his rod towards the land (and saying): It is Taiba, i. e. Madinah."

Tamim Dari came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and informed Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) that he sailed in an ocean and his ship lost direction and thus landed at an island. They moved about in that land in search of water. There they saw a person who had been pulling his hair. The rest of the hadith is the same. And he (Dajjal) said: If I were to be permitted to set out I would have covered all the lands except Taiba. Then Allah's Messerger (ﷺ) brought (Tamim Dari) before the public and he narrated to them and said: That is Taiba and that is the Dajjal.

Fatima bin Qais reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sat on the pulpit and said: O people, Tamim Dari has reported to me that some persons of his tribe sailed in the ocean in a boat and it capsised and then some of them travelled on one of the planks of the boat and they went to an island in the ocean. The rest of the hadith is the same.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Jassasah:
The one who spies,
because she spies for the Dajjal.

(2)
Fasiba fi awwal al-jihad:
He was martyred in the first jihad.
This is a mistake of the narrator,
because he went to Yemen with Ali,
he died there, and according to some, he died during the caliphate of Umar radi Allahu anhu.
Yes, it is possible that he was wounded in the first jihad with you,
but died later, and participating in battle with you is a praiseworthy act. He had given Fatimah three divorces (talaq) at intervals,
so after the completion of her waiting period (‘iddah),
Muawiyah,
Abu Juhm, and Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhum sent marriage proposals. Therefore, to say that I became his widow is not correct.
He had given her three divorces at intervals, and sent the last divorce from Yemen, and Ali went to Yemen in the tenth year of Hijrah. Abdullah’s father’s name is Amr and his mother’s name is Umm Maktum,
so Ibn Umm Maktum
is an attribute of Abdullah,
not of Amr.
Since he also belonged to their tribe,
he was called a paternal cousin.

(3)
As-salatu jami‘ah:
Both words are attributed,
the first is the object of an omitted verb and the second is a circumstantial qualifier (hal),
or both are nominative,
i.e., hadhihi as-salatu jami‘ah,
or hadhihi as-salatu is nominative and jami‘ah is the circumstantial qualifier. It is not correct to use this hadith as evidence for tathwib (the additional announcement after the adhan),
because these words are said
when people are to be gathered in the mosque at a time that is not the time of prayer. Tamim Dari became Muslim in 9 AH,
he was a monk and worshipper from the people of Palestine, and he alone was honored by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam narrating the hadith of Jassasah from him.

(4)
Arfaw:
They anchored,
marfa‘,
harbor.

(5)
Aqrab:
Plural of qarib,
which by analogy is qa‘rab,
a small boat,
dinghy.

(6)
Ahlab:
Very hairy,
therefore kathir ash-sha‘r (much hair) is its explanation.

(7)
Dayr:
A monk’s hut,
here it means a palace.

(8)
Al-ashwaq:
Eager,
one who has much longing.

(9)
Wathaq:
Shackles,
bondage.

(10)
Ightalam:
To exceed the limit,
i.e., it was tempestuous.

(11)
Baysan:
A region of Yamamah where there are many date palms,
also a region of Jordan,
but there are not so many dates there.

(12)
Zughar:
A village in the region of Sham,
which, according to Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, is the name of the younger daughter of Lut alayhis salam,
she is buried there.

(13)
Mahu:
The “ma” is additional for emphasis, indicating that it is certainly towards the east.

Benefits and Issues:
Benefit: The emergence of the Beast is one of the important signs before the Day of Judgment. The appearance of a specific animal that will speak to people is an absolute truth, and in the Noble Qur’an, Allah says: When the word (of punishment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring forth for them a creature from the earth that will speak to them, because people did not believe in Our signs. (An-Naml 83) .

In some narrations, this animal has been interpreted as “Jassamah.” And Allah knows best.

For details, see Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Qurtubi, etc.

Benefit: Only that faith is beneficial and accepted which is in the unseen; after witnessing the realities of the Hereafter, faith will not be of any benefit in any way.

Even in the Hereafter, the disbelievers will say: (رَبَّنَاۤ اَبْصَرْنَا وَ سَمِعْنَا فَارْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا اِنَّا مُوْقِنُوْنَ) “O our Lord, now we have seen and heard, so send us back that we may do righteous deeds; now we are certain.” But returning to the world will not be possible.

Benefits and Issues:

Our esteemed researcher has declared the rest of the narration, except for the underlined sentences, to be authentic, and has further written that the hadith of Sahih Muslim (2942) suffices for this.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also declared the rest of the narration, except for the underlined words, to be authentic. Therefore, the mentioned narration, except for the underlined words, is actionable and a valid proof.
And Allah knows best.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would sometimes explain necessary matters after Fajr, for example:
the interpretation of dreams, etc.
However, it was not his practice to deliver a sermon from the pulpit after Fajr.

The reason for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam being pleased is that he too used to warn about the Dajjal.
The incident of Tamim al-Dari radi Allahu anhu further confirmed this.
In Sahih Muslim, these words are found:
“He told me something that agrees with what I used to tell you about the Masih al-Dajjal.” (Sahih Muslim, Al-Fitan, Chapter: The Story of al-Jassasah, Hadith: 2942)

Regarding al-Jassasah, these words are found in Sahih Muslim:
“Her body was so covered with hair that due to the abundance of hair, it was not possible to discern her front from her back.”

‘Amman and Baysan are two cities of al-Sham (Greater Syria). ‘Amman is the capital of present-day Jordan.

Zughar is a city in al-Sham.
There is a spring near it.
The Lake of Tiberias is in al-Sham.

The Dajjal will not be able to enter Madinah Munawwarah, but there will be three earthquakes in Madinah, and all the disbelievers and hypocrites present in Madinah will leave Madinah and join the Dajjal. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Fitan, Chapter: Mention of the Dajjal, Hadith: 7124)

The Dajjal will also not enter Makkah Mukarramah. (Sahih Muslim, Al-Fitan, Chapter: The Story of al-Jassasah, Hadith: 2942)
