Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Bakr that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the night of Aqabah, "Select twelve men from among yourselves to come to me, who will be guarantors for their respective tribes, just as the disciples of Jesus son of Mary were guarantors." So, the guarantors from Banu Najjar... Ibn Idris says: Banu Najjar were maternal uncles of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)... were As‘ad bin Zurarah and Abu Umamah. And the two naqibs (guarantors) of Banu Harith bin Khazraj were Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah and Sa‘d bin Rabi‘. And the two naqibs of Banu Salamah were Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Haram and Hazrat Bara’ bin Ma‘rur. And the two naqibs of Banu Sa‘idah were Hazrat Sa‘d bin ‘Ubadah and Hazrat Mundhir bin Amr. And the naqib of Banu Zuraiq was Rafi‘ bin Malik. And the naqib of Banu ‘Awf bin Khazraj... these people were known by the title of Qawaqil... was ‘Ubadah bin Samit. And the two naqibs of Banu ‘Abd al-Ashhal were Hazrat Usayd bin Hudayr and Hazrat Abu al-Haytham bin Tayhan. And the naqib of Banu ‘Amr bin ‘Awf was Hazrat Sa‘d bin Khaythamah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin Amr Ansari that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took a pledge from us at the base of the valley on the Day of Sacrifice, and we were seventy in number... Hazrat Uqbah says: I was the youngest among them... Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us and said, "Keep the conversation brief because I fear the disbelievers of Quraysh for you." The narrator says: We said, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon you! Ask us about your Lord, and ask us anything about yourself, and ask us anything about your companions, and also tell us what reward is obligatory for us from Allah and from you." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I ask you about my Lord that you believe in Him and do not associate anything with Him, and I ask you about myself that you obey me and I will guide you to the path of guidance. And I ask you about my companions that you show kindness to them with your wealth, and that you withhold from us those things which you withhold from yourselves. So when you do these things, then Paradise is obligatory for you from Allah and from me." The narrator says: So we stretched out our hands and pledged allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha’bi that Hazrat Abbas came along with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the Ansar, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Speak, but do not prolong the conversation. Spies have been appointed over you, and I fear the disbelievers of Quraysh regarding you.” Then one of them—whose kunyah was Abu Umamah—said to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Ask us for your Lord, ask us for yourself, and ask us for your companions. And (tell us) what reward will be given for this?” The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I ask you regarding my Lord that you worship Him and do not associate anything with Him. And for myself, I ask you to believe in me and to restrain from me those things from which you restrain from yourselves and your sons. And for my companions, I ask you to show kindness to them with your wealth.” The Ansar asked: “When we do all this, what will we receive?” The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Paradise will be obligatory for you from Allah.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu al-Tufail that there was some dispute between Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man from among the people of Aqabah. So he asked, "I ask you by Allah, (tell me) what was the number of the Companions of Aqabah?" Upon this, the people also said, "Tell him, because he has asked you." Then Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari said, "Indeed, we have received the information that they were fourteen." Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "And if you had been among them, they would have been fifteen. I swear by Allah that twelve of them were at war with Allah and His Messenger in this world and the Hereafter. And three made excuses and said, 'We did not hear the call of the Messenger of Allah, and we do not know what the people want.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Ismail bin Khalid that I heard Abdullah bin Abi Awfa — he was among those companions who pledged allegiance under the tree — say that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, supplicated against the armies and said: "O Allah! Revealer of the Book, Swift in reckoning, Defeater of the armies, O Allah! Defeat them and shake them."

Hazrat Amr bin Murrah says that I heard Ibn Abi Awfa saying that the companions who pledged allegiance to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) under the tree were fourteen hundred or thirteen hundred, and the people of the tribe of Aslam were one-eighth of the Muhajireen.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amir that under the tree, the first to pledge allegiance was Abu Sinan Asadi Wahb. He came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I pledge allegiance to you." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "On what matter do you pledge allegiance to me?" Abu Sinan said, "On that which is in your heart." The narrator says, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted his pledge. The narrator says, then another man came to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "On the matter upon which Abu Sinan pledged allegiance, I also pledge allegiance to you." So he too pledged allegiance to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the rest of the people pledged allegiance to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Aamir that "As-Sabiqun al-Awwalun" are those people who took part in the Bay'at al-Ridwan.
