Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Hadard that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us with an army towards Adh-dham. The narrator says: Then we met Amir bin Adhbat. The narrator says: He greeted us with the greeting of Muslims, but we took his weapons from him, and Muhallim bin Jathamah attacked him and killed him. Then, when he had killed him, he took possession of his camel and equipment. So when we returned, we presented his case to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him about what had happened. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: "O you who believe! When you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate carefully, and do not say to anyone who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer.'" __QUR_N__ 2. Ibn Ishaq says: Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated to me from Zayd bin Dumrah, who said... My father and uncle narrated to me... and both of them participated in Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him... They both narrate that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the Zuhr prayer, then sat under a tree. Then the chief of the tribe of Khindif, Aqra' bin Habis, stood up towards the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and was preventing the blood of Muhallim. And 'Uyainah bin Hisn stood up and began to demand blood money for Amir bin Adhbat al-Qaysi... and he was from Ashja'... The narrator says: I heard 'Uyainah bin Hisn say, "I will surely make his women taste the grief and sorrow that he made my women taste." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Will you accept the blood money?" They refused. Then a man from Banu Layth stood up, who was called Mukaytil, and he said, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! By Allah, I will not liken this slain man in the bright era of Islam except to a goat that wandered off and was struck by an arrow, causing the others to flee. Decide a way today and change (the situation) tomorrow." The narrator says: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured with both hands and said: "On this journey you will get fifty, and fifty you will get when we return." The narrator says: So they accepted the blood money. 3. The narrator says: The people said, "Bring your man so that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, may seek forgiveness for him." So the man was brought. The narrator describes his condition: he was wearing the same garment in which he had killed. Until he was made to sit before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him: "What is your name?" The man replied: "Muhallim bin Jathamah." Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured with both hands. The narrator says: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised both hands (and said), "O Allah! Do not forgive Muhallim bin Jathamah." The narrator says: This person told us that this (curse) was said by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, openly, while he sought forgiveness for him in private. 4. Ibn Ishaq says: Amr bin Ubaid told me from Hasan that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Muhallim: "You granted him protection in the name of Allah and then killed him. By Allah! Muhallim did not remain even seven days before he died." The narrator says: I heard Hasan swear by Allah that Muhallim was buried three times, but each time the earth threw him out. The narrator says: So the people placed him between two mountains and put large stones over him, then the beasts devoured him. The people mentioned this matter before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he said: "By Allah! The earth covers even more wicked people than this, but Allah wanted to inform you about the sanctity among yourselves (therefore this incident occurred)."

39789 - Ibn Ishaq said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far informed me, from Zayd ibn Dumayrah, who said: My father and my uncle narrated to me—(and they) (1) witnessed Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Dhuhr, then sat under a tree. (Al-Aqra') (3) ibn Habis, who was the chief of Khindif, came to him, seeking to prevent (the blood) (5) of Muhallim, and 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn came seeking retaliation for the blood of 'Amir ibn al-Adbat al-Qaysi, who was (an Ashja'i) (6). He said: I heard 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn say: "I will make his women taste grief as my women (have tasted)" (8). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Will you accept the blood money?" But they refused. Then a man from Banu Layth, called (Makitil) (9) (10), stood up and said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah (11), I have not likened (this) (12) (killed man) (13) in the (dawn) (14) of Islam except to (sheep) (15) that came to water, and was shot, so the last of them scattered ⦗122⦘. (Spare) (16) (today) (17) and (not) (18) tomorrow." The Prophet ﷺ gestured with his hands and said: "You will have fifty (camels) on this journey of ours, and fifty when we return." They accepted the blood money. They said: "Bring your companion so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may seek forgiveness for him." (19) He was brought (and his appearance was described), and he was wearing (a garment) (21) prepared for execution, until he was seated before the Prophet ﷺ. He said: "What is your name?" (He said) (22): Muhallim ibn Juthamah. The Prophet ﷺ (gestured with his hands and it was described that he raised them) (23) and said: "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim ibn Juthamah." He said: We discussed among ourselves that he only made this public, but had sought forgiveness for him in secret (24).

39790 - Ibn Ishaq said: Amr ibn Ubayd informed me from al-Hasan who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "You granted him safety by Allah, then you killed him. By Allah, he did not remain but seven (days) until Muhallim died." He said: I heard al-Hasan (swear) (1) by Allah: He was buried three times, and each time the earth (cast him out) (2) ⦗123⦘. So they placed him between (the echo) (3) of a mountain and (heaped) (4) stones over him, and the beasts devoured him. They mentioned his affair to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (5) and he said: "By Allah, the earth (encloses) (6) over one who is (worse) (7) than him, but Allah wanted to (inform you) (8) (of your sanctity) (9) among yourselves." (10).
