Hadith 39560
Narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the day of the Trench, I went out following the footprints of the people. Then I heard the sound of people behind me. I turned my attention and saw that it was Sa’d bin Ubadah, and with him was his nephew Harith bin Aws, who was carrying his shield. So I sat down on the ground. She says: Then Sa’d passed by, and he was wearing armor, and its edges were protruding. And I was afraid of Sa’d’s edges. She says: This man was among the people of large stature and tall. She says: Then he passed by reciting rajaz poetry and saying: “Wait a little, let the battle intensify. When the appointed time comes, how good is death.” 2. She says: Then I stood up and entered a small garden, where there were a few Muslims, among whom was Umar bin Khattab, and among them was a man who was wearing a helmet. The narrator says… Umar said: Strange! What has brought you here? Strange! What has brought you here? By Allah! You are very bold. What has made you secure from flight and trial? Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Umar kept reproaching me until I wished that the earth would split open and I would enter it. She says: Then the (other) man removed his helmet from his face, and he was Talha bin Ubaidullah. The narrator says: He said: O Umar! Woe to you, today you have reproached a lot. To whom can there be flight and trial except Allah? 3. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A man from the polytheists of Quraysh, who was called Hibban bin al-‘Arqah, shot an arrow at Sa’d and said: Take this, I am Ibn al-‘Arqah. The arrow struck Sa’d in the vein of his arm and cut that vein. Sa’d prayed to Allah: O Allah! Do not let me die until You cool my eyes with Banu Qurayza. These people were Sa’d’s allies and companions in the days of ignorance. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Then the blood from his wound stopped. And Allah Almighty sent wind upon the polytheists. “And Allah sufficed the believers in fighting, and Allah is Strong, Mighty.” So Abu Sufyan joined the region of Tihamah, and Uyainah bin Badr bin Hisn and his companions joined the region of Najd, and Banu Qurayza returned and fortified themselves in their forts, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Madinah and ordered that a tent be set up for Sa’d in the mosque, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) put down his weapons, etc. 4. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Then Jibreel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Have you put down your weapons? By Allah! The angels have not put down their weapons. So go to Banu Qurayza and fight them. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the march, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) put on his battle gear and set out. And (when) he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Banu Ghanm… these people were neighbors of the mosque… he asked: Who has passed by you? They replied: Dihyah Kalbi has passed by us. Dihyah’s beard and face resembled Jibreel. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Banu Qurayza and besieged them for twenty-five days. When the siege of Banu Qurayza became severe and the calamity upon them became intense, it was said to them: Submit to the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They consulted Abu Lubabah, and he indicated to them with his hand that the decision would be slaughter. Banu Qurayza said: We submit to the decision of Ibn Mu’adh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Submit to the decision of Sa’d bin Mu’adh. So they submitted. 5. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent someone to Sa’d, and he was mounted on a donkey with a saddle of palm fiber, and his people surrounded him, saying: O Abu Amr! (These people) are your allies and your companions, and people of your acquaintance. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Sa’d did not answer them anything until when Sa’d reached near their houses, he said: Now the time has come for Sa’d that he does not care for the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah. 6. Then when he was before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Sa’id says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Stand up for your chief and bring him...
Hadith 39561
Narrated from Hazrat Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah that when night fell, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, and then Jibreel came to him, or he said: an angel came and asked: Which man from your Ummah has passed away tonight? The inhabitants of the heavens are rejoicing at his death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What happened to Sa’d? The companions informed him: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He has passed away, and his people came and took him to their neighborhood. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Fajr prayer and then set out, and the people also set out with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the people walk quickly, tiring them, until their sandal straps fell from their feet and their cloaks fell from their shoulders. A man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You have tired the people by making them walk quickly? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I feared that the angels might reach Sa’d before us, just as they reached Hanzalah before us.
2. Muhammad says: Ash’ath bin Ishaq informed me that then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached him while he was being washed. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew his knees together and said: An angel has come and there was no place for him to sit, so I made space for him. The mother of Sa’d was weeping and reciting poetry. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All women who weep are liars except the mother of Sa’d.
3. Muhammad says: Some of our companions informed us that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the funeral of Sa’d, some of the hypocrites said: How light is Sa’d’s bier, or they said: How light is Sa’d’s funeral! The narrator says: Sa’d bin Ibrahim narrated to me that on the day Sa’d passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, seventy thousand angels have descended who participated in Sa’d’s funeral. They had never set foot on the earth before that day.
4. Muhammad says: Then I heard Isma’il bin Muhammad bin Sa’d… when he entered our tent while we were burying Waqid bin Amr bin Sa’d bin Mu’adh… he said: Shall I not tell you what I heard from my elders? I heard my elders say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Sa’d’s death: Indeed, seventy thousand angels descended from the sky and participated in Sa’d’s funeral, who had never set foot on the earth before that day.
5. Muhammad says: My father narrated to me, from his father, from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that after the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his two companions (Abu Bakr and Umar), or one of them, the Muslims never felt the loss of anyone more intensely than the loss of Sa’d bin Mu’adh.
6. Muhammad says: Muhammad bin Munkadir narrated to me from Muhammad bin Shurhabil that a man took a handful of earth from Sa’d’s grave on the day of burial, and later when he opened it, it was musk.
7. Muhammad says: And Waqid bin Amr bin Sa’d also narrated to me. The narrator says: Waqid was among the handsome and tall people… Waqid says: I presented myself to Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He said to me: Who are you? I replied: I am Waqid bin Amr bin Sa’d bin Mu’adh. Anas said: May Allah have mercy on Sa’d. You indeed resemble Sa’d. Then he said: May Allah have mercy on Sa’d. He was taller and more handsome than the (common) people. Anas said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a delegation to Akidar of Dumah, so he sent a silk robe woven with gold to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore that robe, then stood on the pulpit and then sat down, but he did not say anything. The people began to touch the robe and look at it with wonder. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you marvel at this robe? The people replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have never seen a garment more beautiful than this. You (peace and blessings be upon him)…

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was gifted a silk garment, so people began to marvel at its softness. Hazrat Abu Ishaq says: I heard Muhallab bin Abi Sufrah—while he was mentioning the Haruriyyah and their night raids—say that the companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said on the day of the Trench: and (at that time) he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) feared that Abu Sufyan would launch a night raid. If a night raid is launched against you, then say: Ham La Yunṣarūn.

You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and you have a distinguished position in precedence and seniority, and yet you are weeping over a woman? Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: He uncovered his head and said: By my life! You have spoken the truth. After Sa’d ibn Mu’adh, no one deserves to be wept over. As for him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said what he said about him. I asked: What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say about him? Hadith 39580
Hazrat Hisham narrates from his father that among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there was a man who was called "Mas'ud." He was very much a talebearer. So, when it was the day of the Trench, Banu Qurayza sent a message to Abu Sufyan: "Send some men to us who will be stationed in our forts (as defenders), so that we may fight Muhammad from the (inner) side of Madinah, and you fight from the side of the trench." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, found it difficult to fight on two fronts. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Mas'ud: "O Mas'ud! We have sent a message to Banu Qurayza that they should send their men to Abu Sufyan. When Abu Sufyan sends his men to them, the people of Banu Qurayza will kill them." When Mas'ud heard this, he could not restrain himself and went and told this to Abu Sufyan. Abu Sufyan said, "By God! Muhammad has always spoken the truth and has never lied." Thus, he did not send anyone to Banu Qurayza. (This action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was part of a war strategy.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions dug the trench for three days in such a state that they had not even tasted food. Then the companions submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! A very hard part of the mountain has come up." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Sprinkle water on it." So the companions sprinkled water on that part, then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, took a pickaxe or a spade in his hand and said, "In the name of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck it three times, and that part turned into a heap of sand. Hazrat Jabir says: "Then I happened to glance at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that he had tied a stone to his blessed stomach."

If it were not for You, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor performed prayer." "So send down tranquility upon us, and make our feet firm if we meet (the enemy)."
