Allah revealed this verse: { وَإِنْ عَاقَبْتُمْ فَعَاقِبُوا بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبْتُمْ بِہِ ، وَلَئِنْ صَبَرْتُمْ لَہُوَ خَیْرٌ لِلصَّابِرِینَ } The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Rather, we will be patient.

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a white and black striped blanket. When the blanket was placed over Hamza's blessed head, his feet would be uncovered, and when it was pulled towards his feet, his head would be uncovered. When the companions would cover his head with it, his feet would become uncovered, and when they pulled it towards his feet, his blessed head would become uncovered. Then he felt ashamed and returned to Makkah, and wrote a letter to his brother Julas bin Suwaid: “O my brother! I am regretful for what I have done, so I repent to Allah and turn back to Islam. Mention this matter before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and if you have hope regarding the acceptance of my repentance, then write to me.” Julas mentioned this before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: { کَیْفَ یَہْدِی اللَّہُ قَوْمًا کَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِیمَانِہِمْ } Upon this, some of his former companions said, “He supports his people against us, then turns back to Islam.” So this verse was revealed: {إِنَّ الَّذِینَ کَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِیمَانِہِمْ ، ثُمَّ ازْدَادُوا کُفْرًا ، لَنْ تُقْبَلَ تَوْبَتُہُمْ وَأُولَئِکَ ہُمُ الضَّالُّونَ }
