Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi that on the day of Uhud, a woman gave her son a sword, but the boy did not have the strength to lift the sword. So the woman tied the sword to the boy's arm with a rope. Then the woman brought the boy to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is my son and he will fight on your behalf." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "O son! Attack in this direction. O son! Attack in that direction." Then the boy was wounded and fell down. Then the boy was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O son! Perhaps you became afraid?" He replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!"

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud that on the day of Uhud, behind the Muslims were women who were killing the wounded of the polytheists. So if I had sworn an oath that day, I would not have been a liar that: none of us intended the world at all. Until Allah Almighty revealed this verse. { مِنْکُمْ مَنْ یُرِیدُ الدُّنْیَا وَمِنْکُمْ مَنْ یُرِیدُ الآخِرَۃَ ، ثُمَّ صَرَفَکُمْ عَنْہُمْ لِیَبْتَلِیَکُمْ } 2. Then when the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disagreed and acted contrary to the command, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was left among nine (9) individuals... among whom seven were Ansar and two were Qurayshi... you (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were the tenth among them. Then when the polytheists surrounded the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he said: May Allah have mercy on the man who keeps them away from us. The narrator says: One of the Ansar stood up and fought for a while until he was killed. Then the polytheists again surrounded the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said: May Allah have mercy on the man who keeps them (the polytheists) away from us. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept saying this until seven individuals were killed. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his two companions: We have not done justice to our companions. 3. Then Abu Sufyan came and said: Hubal is exalted! The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You (companions) say: Allah is Exalted and Most Great. Then Abu Sufyan said: For us is ‘Uzza and you have no ‘Uzza. So the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said (to the companions): You say: Allah is our Protector and the disbelievers have no protector. Then Abu Sufyan said: (This) day is in exchange for the day of Badr. One day is for us and one day is against us; one day we are afflicted and one day we are made happy. The killing of Hanzalah is in exchange for Hanzalah, and so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: This is not equality. In any case, our slain are alive and are being provided for, and your slain are being punished in Hell. 4. Then Abu Sufyan said: Among the people, the act of mutilation has occurred, although it happened without consulting me. I neither ordered it nor forbade it. I neither liked it nor disliked it. And this thing neither seemed bad to me nor good. The narrator says: Then the people saw that the belly of Hazrat Hamza had been ripped open and Hind had taken out his liver and chewed it, but she could not eat it. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: Did Hind eat anything from the liver? The people replied: No! The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah did not want any part of Hamza to enter Hell. 5. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed Hazrat Hamza (his body) and offered the funeral prayer over him, and then an Ansari companion (a martyred companion) was brought and placed beside Hazrat Hamza, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over him. Then the body of the Ansari was taken away and the body of Hazrat Hamza was left, and then another body was brought and placed beside Hazrat Hamza, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over that body. Then the second body was taken away and Hazrat Hamza was left, then another body was brought and placed beside Hazrat Hamza, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over it. Then that body was taken away and Hazrat Hamza was left. In this way, on that day, seventy funeral prayers were offered over Hazrat Hamza.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ikrimah that on the day of Uhud, the blessed head of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wounded and his four blessed front teeth were martyred, and due to thirst, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the verge of death. To the extent that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to bend on his knees, and his companions separated from him. Then Ubayy bin Khalaf came, demanding the blood of his brother Umayyah bin Khalaf, and said: Where is that man who claims that he is a prophet? Let him come and duel with me. If he is a prophet, then he will kill me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give me a spear. The companions submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Do you have the strength? (i.e., you are thirsty) The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, I have asked Allah Almighty for satiation through his blood. Then the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the spear and walked towards him, and struck him with the spear and knocked him off his mount. The companions of Ubayy bin Khalaf picked him up and took him away to save him, and they said to him: In our opinion, nothing has happened to you? He replied: Indeed, he (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) has asked Allah Almighty for satiation through my blood. So I am feeling such pain that if it were for the tribe of Rabi'ah and the tribe of Mudar, it would have sufficed for them as well.

A similar narration is also reported from Hazrat Zubair.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Hazrat Hamza was martyred on the day of Uhud, Hazrat Safiyyah came to look for him. She did not know what had happened. The narrator says: She met Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Zubair. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Hazrat Zubair: Tell your mother about Hazrat Hamza. Hazrat Zubair said: No! Rather, you tell her about your uncle. Hazrat Safiyyah began to ask: What has Hamza done? The narrator says: Both of them (Ali and Zubair, may Allah be pleased with them) made it appear as if they did not know. The narrator says: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and said: I fear for her mind. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on her chest and prayed for her. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Safiyyah recited "Inna lillahi" and began to weep. The narrator says: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and stood by Hazrat Hamza, while he had been mutilated. And he said: If it were not for the weeping and wailing of women, I would have left him (Hamza) as he is, so that he would be gathered on the Day of Resurrection from the crops of birds and the bellies of beasts. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered regarding the martyrs, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to offer the funeral prayer over them. The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept nine individuals along with Hazrat Hamza and offered the funeral prayer over them with seven takbirs. Then the rest of the bodies were taken away and Hamza was left. Then nine individuals were brought and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over them with seven takbirs, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished with them.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Ka’b bin Malik narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said on the day of Uhud: “Who has seen the place where Hamza was killed?” An unarmed man said, “I have seen the place where Hamza was killed.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Come and show us the place where he was killed.” So that man went out until he stood by the body of Hazrat Hamza, and he saw that Hamza’s stomach had been ripped open and his body mutilated. That man said, “O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! By Allah! He has been mutilated.” The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, disliked looking towards Hamza, and he stood among the martyrs and said: “I myself am a witness over these people. Wrap them in their blood, for none of the wounded among them will come on the Day of Resurrection except that his wound will be flowing with blood. Its color will be the color of blood, but its fragrance will be the fragrance of musk. Give precedence among them to the one who knows more of the Qur’an, and place him first in the grave.”

Hazrat Saeed bin Hisham narrates from his father that on the day of Uhud, when the large number of those killed was mentioned to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Dig graves, make them wide and good. And bury two or three people in one grave. Give precedence among the dead to the one who knows more Qur'an." So the people gave precedence to my father over two men.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Uhud, some (hypocrite) people went out with him and then turned back. The narrator says: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were divided into two groups regarding such people. One group said: We will fight them. And the other group said: We will not fight them. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: { فَمَا لَکُمْ فِی الْمُنَافِقِینَ فِئَتَیْنِ وَاللَّہُ أَرْکَسَہُمْ بِمَا کَسَبُوا } The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is Tayyibah, and it removes impurity just as fire removes the filth from silver.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that when Hazrat Muawiyah caused a spring to flow, there was a cry concerning the martyrs of Uhud. So we exhumed them after forty years had passed. Their bodies were wrapped with their limbs intact.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Talha that on the day of Uhud, I began to raise my head and look around. I did not see a single companion except that, due to drowsiness, he was jolting under his shield.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abzi that on the day of Uhud, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought in single combat with Talha and Musafi’ from Banu Shaybah. The narrator says: The teacher also mentioned the name of another man. The narrator says: Thus, apart from those common people (disbelievers) whom Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed, he also killed these three. Then when he returned, he said to Hazrat Fatimah: Hold the sword without reproach. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you have fought excellently, then such-and-such Ansari also, and such-and-such Ansari also, and such-and-such Ansari also fought excellently, to the extent that they gave up their lives or were close to giving up their lives.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hakam that when, on the day of Uhud, the four blessed front teeth of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were martyred, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah's wrath is severe upon three people. Upon the person who considers himself the king of kings. And Allah's wrath is also severe upon the person who martyred the tooth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and wounded his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. And God's wrath is also severe upon the person who thinks that God has a son.

A man narrates that on the day of Uhud, the helmet on the blessed head of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was broken, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) teeth were martyred, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed face was wounded, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was treated with a burnt mat. And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Abi Talib was bringing water in a shield to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Ayyub that Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr said to Hazrat Abu Bakr: I saw you on the day of Uhud, but I turned away from you. The narrator says: Hazrat Abu Bakr said: But if I had seen you, I would not have turned away from you.
