Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw Hazrat Hasan bin Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, holding a date from charity and putting it in his mouth. So the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Kakh, Kakh" (that is, take it out), for charity is not lawful for us.

Hazrat Abu Rafi narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man from the Banu Makhzum to collect charity. Abu Rafi intended to go after him, so he asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not know that charity is not lawful for us, and indeed, the slave of a people is considered among them.

Hazrat Abu Laila narrates that I was present with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he stood up and entered the room of charity, and with him a child, either Hasan or Husayn, also entered. Then the child picked up a date and put it in his mouth. So the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made him take it out and said: Indeed, charity is not lawful for us.

Hazrat Abu Umairah Rasheed bin Malik narrates that one day I was present in the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man arrived carrying a tray in which there were dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is this? Is it charity or a gift?" The man replied, "(It is not a gift) rather, it is charity." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then passed the tray of dates towards the people. Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was rolling in the dust in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he picked up a date and put it in his mouth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, so he put his blessed finger into his mouth and took it out. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Indeed, we, the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), do not eat charity."

Hazrat Ibn Abi Mulaika narrates that Khalid bin Saeed bin Al-Aas sent a cow to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), but she sent it back and said: We, the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), do not eat charity.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Buraidah narrates from his father that when Hazrat Salman Farsi came to Madinah, he brought a tray as a gift to the service of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and placed that tray before him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, "What is this?" The narrator then related the complete hadith further.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found a date, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If it were not from charity, I would have eaten it. And (Imam) Abu Hanifa's opinion has been mentioned that: Charity is permissible for the clients and others of Banu Hashim.
