Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night prayer is in sets of two (rak‘ahs), and witr is one, and before Fajr there are two (sunnah) rak‘ahs.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night prayer is (offered in sets of) two (rak‘ahs) each; so when you fear the arrival of morning, make witr with one rak‘ah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night prayer is (to be offered) two by two (rak‘ahs), so when you fear that morning is near, then pray one rak‘ah, and it will make what you have already prayed an odd (witr) prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Salamah that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say salam after every two rak‘ahs in the night prayer.

Hazrat Qabeesah bin Dhuwaiyb says that I was praying when Hazrat Abu Hurairah passed by me and said: "Make a separation!" I did not understand what he meant. So when I finished, I asked, "What should I separate?" He said: "Make a separation between the night prayer and the day prayer."

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair. He says that there is a pause between every two rak'ahs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ikrimah that there is Salam between every two rak‘ahs.

Hazrat Salim says that the night prayer is (performed in sets of) two (rak‘ahs) each.

Muhammad says that the night prayer is in sets of two rak‘ahs, and at the end of the night there is one rak‘ah of witr. And (Imam) Abu Hanifa’s statement is mentioned that: If you wish, then pray two rak‘ahs, and if you wish, then pray four rak‘ahs, and if you wish, then pray six rak‘ahs, and do not separate them.
