Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the people of affliction will wish on the Day of Judgment that their bodies had been cut with scissors.

Hazrat Hisham, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates from his father that when Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, became the caliph, people's waistbands used to be only sheets, and their shawls were also striped sheets. Among them, one would say to another that my sheet is better than your sheet.

Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) Al-Adawi said: Adhere to the company of this Sheikh, that is, Hasan Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), because I have not seen anyone whose opinion resembles the opinion of Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) more than his.

Hazrat Mutarrif (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I do not say Ameen to anyone's supplication without hearing it, except for the supplication of Hasan Basri.

Hazrat Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abu Barzah (may Allah have mercy on him) used to remain in a soiled state, and ‘A’id bin ‘Amr Muzani used to wear fine clothes. A man came to one of them and said, “Do you not see your other brother who wears such and such clothes and turns away from your style of dress?” He replied, “Who can be like him? He has such and such virtue, and he has attained such and such rank.” Then the man went to the other, and he gave the same answer as the first.

Hazrat Asma bint Yazid narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Greatest Name of Allah is in these two verses: { وَإِلَہُکُمْ إلَہٌ وَاحِدٌ لاَ إلَہَ إِلاَّ ہُوَ الرَّحْمَن الرَّحِیمُ } and in Surah Al-Fatiha and this verse of Surah Aal-e-Imran { الم اللَّہُ لاَ إلَہَ إِلاَّ ہُوَ الْحَیُّ الْقَیُّومُ }.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Buraidah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he (the Prophet e) heard a man supplicating: "O Allah, I ask You by the fact that You are Allah, the One, the Self-Sufficient, Who did not beget nor was begotten, and there is none comparable to Him." So he (the Prophet e) said: "You have supplicated to Allah by His Greatest Name; if He is supplicated by it, He grants, and if asked by it, He gives."

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man supplicating with these words: "O Allah, I ask You because all praise is due to You; there is no deity except You, You are One, You have no partner, the Most Gracious, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty and Honor." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have supplicated with Allah’s Greatest Name; when He is asked by it, He gives, and when supplicated by it, He responds."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Sabit (may Allah have mercy on him) that someone supplicated during the time of the Noble Prophet e in these words: "Indeed, I ask You by Your Name, there is no deity except You, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, and when You intend a matter, You only say to it 'Be,' and it is." So the Prophet e said, "You were near," or he said, "This man was very close to supplicating with the Greatest Name."

Hazrat Abu Darda and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) say that the Greatest Name of Allah is "Rabb".

Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Umair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man recited Surah Al-Baqarah and Aal-e-Imran, so Ka'b said that this person has recited two such Surahs in which there is such a Name that if supplication is made through it, it is accepted.

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the greatest name of Allah Almighty is "Allah".

Hazrat Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Greatest Name of Allah is “Allah.” Then he or I recited from { ہُوَ اللَّہُ الْخَالِقُ الْبَارِیئُ المُصَوِّر } to the end of the Surah before him.

Hazrat Zumrah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abu Rayhanah (may Allah have mercy on him) once passed by some grain which the grain owners were dividing among themselves. He heard the sound of commotion and asked, "What is this noise?" The reply was given, "This is grain which the grain owners are dividing among themselves." So he prayed, "O Allah! Do not make this grain a trial for them," and he kept repeating this. It is unknown when his voice ceased.

Hazrat Hamzah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abu Rayhanah (may Allah have mercy on him) was residing on the island of Miyafarqin. There, he bought a rope from the household of a Nabati. Then, when the caravan set out and the people reached the place of Rasīn, he dismounted from his ride and asked his servant, "Did you pay that Nabati?" He replied, "No." So he took out some expenses from his own provisions, gave the rest of the goods to the servant, and said to his companions, "Take care of this ride and the goods until I return home." They asked, "Abu Rayhanah, where are you going?" He replied, "I intend to go to my creditor and return his trust to him." Then he set out until he reached Miyafarqin, and after paying his debt, he returned home.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says in the explanation of { کَلاَّ بَلْ لاَ یَخَافُونَ الآخِرَۃَ } that this very thing has destroyed you.

Hazrat Malik bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) about the interpretation of Allah’s statement { لَئِنْ لَمْ یَنْتَہِ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِہِمْ مَرَضٌ}, so he replied that it refers to adulterers.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the explanation of Allah Almighty’s command { ہُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِکُمْ إذْ أَنْشَأَکُمْ مِنَ الأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنْتُمْ أَجِنَّۃٌ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّہَاتِکُمْ } that Allah Almighty knows about every soul what deed it will do, what work it will perform, and what its abode will be.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Gentleness is better in every matter except in those matters which are related to the Hereafter.

Hazrat Harith bin Qais, may Allah have mercy on him, said: When you are engaged in a worldly task, complete it quickly, and if you are engaged in a task of the Hereafter, do it calmly and with as much composure as possible. And when Satan comes to you during prayer and says that you are showing off, then perform the prayer more and make it longer.

It is narrated about Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym (may Allah have mercy on him) that a beggar came to him, so he said, “Give him some sugar.” His family members said, “What will he do with sugar?” He replied, “I will do something with it.”

Hazrat Maymun narrates that a son of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) gave him an izar to wear. Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Cut it and wear it." That person disliked this, so Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Do not be among those who restrict Allah's sustenance to their bellies and bodies only."

Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: For the one who does not know, there is destruction once, and for the one who knows but does not act, there is destruction six times.

Hazrat Wahb bin Munabbih says that we have read in the Book revealed by Allah Almighty that people have become religious without worship, they include the world in the deeds of the Hereafter, people wear sheep’s skins while their hearts are like wolves, their tongues are sweeter than honey while their hearts are more bitter than aloe. Do these people deceive Me and betray Me? By My oath, I will send upon them such a punishment that even their forbearing ones will be astonished.

Hazrat Maymoon (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a person cannot become pious until he holds himself accountable in the same way as he holds his partner accountable. To the extent that he knows the sources of his food, drink, and clothing.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates about his father that he was among the people who prayed the most and used to fast only on the day of Ashura.

Hazrat Salamah bin Naseet, may Allah have mercy on him, said: O my son, get up and offer prayer at the time of Suhoor. If you are not able to do this, then never leave the two rak'ahs of Fajr.

Hazrat Yazid bin Hayan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Anbas bin Uqbah al-Taimi (may Allah have mercy on him) (i.e., from the tribe of Taim al-Rabab), when he would prostrate, birds would come and sit on his back and then fly away. The birds considered him to be nothing more than a piece of wall.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding the explanation of Allah Almighty’s saying { وَمَنْ یَتَّقِ اللَّہَ یَجْعَلْ لَہُ مَخْرَجًا } that it refers to every path that is difficult for people.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding Allah’s command { أَمَّنْ ہُوَ قَانِتٌ آنَائَ اللَّیْلِ سَاجِدًا وَقَائِمًا یَحْذَرُ الآخِرَۃَ } says that it means to fear the punishment of the Hereafter.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) or Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the explanation of Allah's statement { لاَ یَحْزُنُہُمَ الْفَزَعُ الأَکْبَرُ } that when they will be covered by the Fire.

Hazrat Abu Bakr Zubaidi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that I have not seen any living person who stayed in the mosque more than the Thawriyyin and the Uraniyyin.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says: O son of Adam! You see the speck in your brother’s eye, but you overlook the beam in your own eye.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is said by people that the tongue of a wise person is behind his heart. When he intends to speak, he asks his heart. If there is benefit in it, he says it; and if there is harm, he remains silent. And the heart of an ignorant person is on one side of his tongue; he does not ask his heart and says whatever comes to his mouth.

Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whoever lets his soul pursue the things that people possess, his sorrow increases and his anger does not diminish.

Hazrat Abu Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I said to Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), "Farqad al-Sabakhi neither eats meat nor such-and-such things." So he replied, "The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were better than him, and they used to eat meat, ghee, and likewise such-and-such things."

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O son of Adam! You will only be held accountable for the deed which you have committed intentionally.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Allah Almighty bestowed abundance upon the people of a certain town to such an extent that they began to use bread for istinja'. Then Allah Almighty afflicted them with hunger until they began to eat that which they used to discard.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man used to frequently come to the door of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Go and learn the Book of Allah." Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the man went away and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) lost track of him. Then, once, that man met Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to scold him. The man replied, "I have found in the Book of Allah that which has made me independent of coming to the door of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)."

Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A person always remains in goodness as long as he does not commit such a major sin that corrupts his mind and heart. And Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) also said: Faith is indeed faith! Because when a person is a believer, there are intercessors for him with Allah whose intercession is accepted.
