Sayings of Dihak ibn Qays رضي الله عنه
Hadith 37519
٣٧٥١٩ - حدثنا (أبو بكر) (١) قال: حدثنا جرير بن عبد الحميد عن عبد العزيز بن رفيع عن تميم بن طرفة قال: سمعت الضحاك بن قيس يقول: يا أيها الناس اعملوا أعمالكم للَّه، فإن اللَّه لا يقبل إلا عملا خالصًا (٢)، لا يعفو أحد منكم عن مظلمة فيقول: هذا للَّه ولوجوهكم، فليس للَّه (٣) إنما هي لوجوههم، ولا يصل أحد منكم رحمه فيقول: هذا للَّه وللرحم، إنما هو للرحم ومن عمل عملا فيجعله للَّه، ولا يشرك فيه شيئًا فإن اللَّه يقول يوم القيامة: من أشرك بي شيئًا في عمل عمله فهو (لشريكه) (٤) ليس لي منه شيء (٥).
Hazrat Dhuhaak bin Qais narrates: O people! Do your deeds for Allah. Because Allah Almighty accepts only pure deeds. None of you should forgive anyone’s oppression by saying: This is for Allah and for you. Then this deed is not for Allah. That deed is only for you. And none of you should maintain ties of kinship by saying: This is for Allah and also for my relatives. This deed is only for the relatives. Whoever does any deed should do it purely for Allah and should not associate anyone with Him in it. Because on the Day of Judgment, Allah Almighty will say: Whoever associated anyone with Me in any of his deeds, then that deed will be for that partner; there is nothing in it for Me.
Hadith 37520
٣٧٥٢٠ - حدثنا جرير عن منصور عن أبي الضحى قال: كان الضحاك بن قيس يقول: يا أيها الناس علموا أولادكم وأهليكم القرآن، فإنه من كتب اللَّه له من مسلم أن يدخله الجنة أتاه ملكان فاكتنفاه فقالا له: اقرأ وارتق في درج الجنة حتى ينزلا به حيث انتهى عمله من القرآن (١).
Hazrat Dhuhaak bin Qais says: O people! Teach the Qur'an to your children and your family members. Because for any Muslim whom Allah Almighty has destined entry into Paradise, two angels will come to him and surround him. Then those angels will say to that person: Keep reciting and keep ascending the steps of Paradise, until he reaches the place where his recitation and practice of the Qur'an ends.
Hadith 37521
٣٧٥٢١ - حدثنا حسين بن علي عن جعفر بن برقان عن ميمون بن مهران قال: قال: سمعت الضحاك بن قيس (يقول) (١): إذكروا اللَّه في الرخاء يذكركم في الشدة، فإن يونس كان عبدا صالحا ذاكرا للَّه فلما وقع في بطن الحوت قال اللَّه: ﴿فَلَوْلَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحِينَ (١٤٣) لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطْنِهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ﴾ [الصافات: ١٤٣ - ١٤٤]، وإن فرعون كان عبدا طاغيا ناسيا لذكر اللَّه فلما أدركه الغرق: ﴿قَالَ آمَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا الَّذِي آمَنَتْ بِهِ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ (٩٠) آلْآنَ وَقَدْ عَصَيْتَ قَبْلُ وَكُنْتَ مِنَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ﴾ [يونس: ٩٠ - ٩١] (٢).
Hazrat Dhuhaak bin Qais says: Remember Allah in times of ease, and He will remember you in times of hardship. For example, Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) was a righteous servant who remembered Allah. So when he went into the belly of the fish, Allah the Exalted said: { فَلَوْلا أَنَّہُ کَانَ مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحِینَ لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطْنِہِ إِلَی یَوْمِ یُبْعَثُونَ } And Pharaoh was a rebellious servant who forgot to remember Allah. So when he began to drown, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except the One in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am among the Muslims." But before this, you were disobedient and among those who spread corruption.
Hadith 37522
٣٧٥٢٢ - حدثنا وكيع عن (قرة) (١) بن خالد السدوسي عن حميد بن هلال العدوي عن خالد بن عمير العدوي. - قال: وحدثنا وكيع عن أبي نعامة سمعه من خالد بن (عمير) (٢) قال: خطبنا عتبة بن غزوان، قال أبو نعامة: على المنبر، ولم يقله قرة، فقال: ألا إن (الدنيا) (٣) ⦗٤٢٠⦘ قد آذنت (بصرم) (٤) (وولت حذاء) (٥)، ولم يبق منها إلا صبابة كصبابة (الإناء) (٦)، فأنتم في دار (منتقلون) (٧) عنها، فانتقلوا بخير من يحضركم، ولقد رأيتني سابع سبعة مع رسول اللَّه ﷺ وما لنا طعام نأكله إلا ورق الشجر، حتى قرحت أشداقنا. - قال قرة: ولقد وجدت بردة -قال: وقال أبو نعامة: التقطت بردة-، فشققتها بنصفين فلبست نصفها وأعطيت سعدا نصفها، وليس من أولئك السبعة أحد اليوم حيٌ إلا على مصر من الأمصار، ولتُجُرِّبنَّ الأمراء بعدي، وإنه واللَّه ما كانت نبوة (إلا) (٨) تناسخت (حتى تكون) (٩) ملكا (وجبربة) (١٠)، ولقد ذكر لي، -قال قرة: أن الحجر، وقال (أبو نعامة) (١١): أن الصخرة- يقذف بها من شفير جهنم فتهوي إلى قرارها، قال قرة: أراه قال: سبعين، وقال أبو نعامة: سبعين خريفًا (ولتملأن) (١٢)، و (أن ما) (١٣) بين المصراعين من أبواب الجنة لمسيرة أربعين عامًا، وليأتين على أبواب الجنة يوم وليس منها باب إلا وهو كظيظ، وإني أعوذ باللَّه أن أكون في نفسي عظيما وعند اللَّه صغيرا (١٤).

Hadith 37523
٣٧٥٢٣ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: أخبرنا محمد بن (عمرو) (١) عن الماجشون ابن أبي سلمة قال: قال: (سعد) (٢) بن معاذ: ثلاث أنا فيما سواهن بعد ضعيف: ما سمعت رسول اللَّه ﷺ يقول قولًا قط إلا علمت أنه حق، ولا صليت صلاة قط فألهاني عنها غيرها حتى أنصرف، ولا تبعت جنازة فحدثت نفسي بغير (ما) (٣) هي قائلة أو يقال لها حتى (نفرغ) (٤) (٥).
It is narrated from Hazrat Majshoon bin Abi Salamah that he says Hazrat Saad bin Muadh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Except for three things, I am still weak. I have never heard anything from the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) except that I knew it to be true, and I have never performed any prayer in which anything distracted me from it until I completed the prayer, and I have never followed a funeral procession with anything else in my heart until we finished with it. Muhammad, the narrator, says: I mentioned this to Imam Zuhri, so he said: May Allah have mercy on Hazrat Saad. He was indeed secure. In my opinion, such a state is that of a prophet.
Hadith 37525
٣٧٥٢٥ - حدثنا أبو أسامة عن سفيان عن أبي سنان عن ابن (أبي الهذيل) (١) قال: بني عبد اللَّه بيتا في داره من لبن ثم دعا عمارا فقال: كيف ترى يا أبا اليقظان؟ فقال: أراك بنيت شديدًا، وأملت بعيدًا، وتموت قريبًا (٢) (٣).
It is narrated from Ibn Abi Al-Hudhayl that he says: Abdullah built a room of solid bricks in his house. Then he called Ammar and asked, "O Abu Al-Yaqzan! What do you think?" He replied, "I think you have built a strong house and have set long hopes, but soon you will die."
