Hadith 37201
٣٧٢٠١ - حدثنا يحيى بن آدم قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن أبي نعامة عن حجير بن (ربيع) (١) قال: قال عمر: إن الفجور هكذا -وغطى رأسه إلى ⦗٣١٦⦘ حاجبيه، (ألا) (٢) إن البر هكذا وكشف رأسه (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Hujair bin Rabee’ah that he says Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, sin is like this, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) bent his head towards his eyebrows. Beware! Indeed, virtue is like this, and he covered his head.
Hadith 37202
٣٧٢٠٢ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا سليمان بن المغيرة قال: قال ثابت: قال أنس: غلا (السعر) (١) غلا (الطعام) (٢) بالمدينة (على عهد عمر) (٣)، فجعل يأكل الشعير فاستنكره بطنه، فأهوى بيده إلى بطنه فقال: واللَّه ما هو إلا ما ترى، حتى يوسع اللَّه على المسلمين (٤).
Hazrat Anas says that prices increased, and during the time of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah, food became expensive. When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started eating the food, it did not suit his stomach. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed towards his stomach with his hand and said: By Allah! You will eat this until Allah Almighty grants ease to the Muslims.
Hadith 37203
٣٧٢٠٣ - حدثنا معاوية بن هشام عن هشام بن سعد عن زيد بن أسلم عن أبيه قال: كنت أمشي مع عمر بن الخطاب فرأى تمرة مطروحة فقال، خذها، قلت: وما أصنع بتمرة قالت: مرة وتمرة حتى تجتمع، (فأخذتها) (١) فمر بمربد تمر فقال: ألقها فيه (٢).
Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam narrates from his father, who says that I was walking with Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He saw a fallen date and said, "Pick it up." I asked, "What should I do with this date?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Dates are gathered one by one." So I picked it up. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a heap of dates and said, "Throw this date here."
Hadith 37204
٣٧٢٠٤ - حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان عن يحيى بن سعيد عن (عبد اللَّه) (١) ابن عامر (٢) قال: خرجت مع عمر فما رأيته مضطربا ⦗٣١٧⦘ فسطاطا (٣) حتى رجع، قال: قلت: بأي شيء كان يستظل؟ قال: يطرح النطع على الشجرة يستظل به (٤).
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Aamir that he said: I went out with Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and I did not see him set up a tent until he returned. The narrator says: I asked, "Then what did he use for shade?" The teacher replied: He would place leather on a tree and use that for shade.
Hadith 37205
٣٧٢٠٥ - حدثنا وكيع عن أسامة عن الزهري عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن قال: قال عمر: لو هلك (حَمَل من ولد) (١) الضان ضياعا بشاطئ الفرات خشيت أن يسألني اللَّه عنه (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Humaid bin Abdur Rahman that he says Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If even a lamb perishes on the bank of the river Euphrates, I fear that Allah, the Exalted, may question me about it.
Hadith 37206
٣٧٢٠٦ - حدثنا علي بن مسهر عن الشيباني عن (يسير) (١) بن عمرو قال: لما أتى عمر بن الخطاب الشام أتي ببرذون فركب عليه، فلما هزه نزل عنه وضرب (وجهه) (٢) وقال: قبحك اللَّه وقبح من علمك هذا (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Yasir bin Amr that he said: When Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Syria, a non-Arab horse was brought. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) mounted it. Then when it started to move, he dismounted from it and struck its face and said: May Allah do bad to you, and may He do bad to the one who taught you this.
Hadith 37207
٣٧٢٠٧ - حدثنا يحيى بن عيسى عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن همام عن حذيفة قال: دخلت على عمر وهو قاعد على جذع في داره، وهو يحدث نفسه فدنوت منه فقلت: ما الذي أهمك يا أمير المؤمنين؟ فقال: هكذا بيده وأشار بها، قال: قلت: الذي يهمك، واللَّه لو رأينا منك أمرا ننكره لقومناك، قال: آللَّهِ الذي لا إله إلا هو، لو رأيتم مني أمرا تنكرونه لقومتموه، فقلت: آللَّهِ الذي لا إله إلا هو، لو رأينا منك أمرا ننكره لقومناك، قال: ففرح بذلك فرحا شديدا، ⦗٣١٨⦘ وقال: الحمد للَّه الذي جعل فيكم أصحاب محمد (١) من الذي [إذا رأى مني أمرا ينكره قومني (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I went to Hazrat Umar while he was at the threshold of his house, talking to himself. I approached him and asked: O Commander of the Faithful! What has made you anxious? He (may Allah be pleased with him) gestured with his hands and said something. The narrator says: I asked, What has caused you to be apprehensive? By Allah! If we see any objectionable matter from you, we will set you straight. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! There is no deity except Allah. If you see any objectionable matter from me, will you set me straight? I said: By Him besides whom there is no deity! If we see any objectionable matter from you, we will certainly set you straight. The narrator says: Upon this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became very happy and said: All praise is due to Allah, who has created among you companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) who, if they see any objectionable matter from me, will set me straight.
Hadith 37208
٣٧٢٠٨ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن همام بن يحيى عن إسحاق بن عبد اللَّه] (١) بن أبي طلحة عن أنس قال: رأيت عمر بن الخطاب (يأكل) (٢) الصاع من التمر بحشفه (٣) (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I saw Hazrat Umar bin Khattab eating inferior dates from a date measure (Sa’).
Hadith 37209
٣٧٢٠٩ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن محمد بن مطرف عن زيد بن أسلم عن أبيه قال: كنت آتي عمر بالصاع من التمر فيقول يا أسلم حت عني قشره فاحشفه فيأكله (١).
Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam narrates from his father that he used to bring a measure of dates to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: O Aslam! Remove the peels from them for me. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) would eat the inferior dates.
Hadith 37210
٣٧٢١٠ - حدثنا أبو (الأحوص) (١) عن سماك عن النعمان بن بشير قال: سئل عمر (عن) (٢) التوبة النصوح، فقال: التوبة النصوح أن يتوب العبد من العمل السيء ثم لا يعود إليه أبدا (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir that he says: Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about sincere repentance (tawbah nasuh), so he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sincere repentance is that a person repents from a bad deed and never returns to it again.
Hadith 37211
٣٧٢١١ - حدثنا أبو (الأحوص) (١) عن سماك عن النعمان بن بشير قال: سئل عمر عن قول اللَّه: ﴿وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ﴾ [التكوير: ٧]، قال: يقرن بين الرجل الصالح مع الرجل الصالح في الجنة، ويقرن بين الرجل السوء مع الرجل السوء في النار (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir that he says: Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the saying of Allah Almighty { وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ }, so he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In Paradise, a righteous person will be joined with a righteous person, and in Hell, an evil person will be joined with an evil person.
Hadith 37212
٣٧٢١٢ - حدثنا حسين بن علي قال: حدثني طعمة بن غيلان الجعفي عن رجل يقال: له ميكائيل شيخ من أهل خراسان قال: كان (عمر) (١) إذا قام من الليل قال: قد ترى مقامي وتعلم حاجتي، فأرجعني من عندك -يا اللَّه- بحاجتي مفلحا منجحا مستجيبا مستجابا لي، قد غفرت لي ورحمتني، فإذا قضى صلاته قال: اللهم لا أرى شيئا من (الدنيا) (٢) يدوم، ولا أرى حالا فيها يستقيم، (اللهم) (٣) اجعلني أنطق فيها بعلم وأصمت فيها بحكم، اللهم لا تكثر لي من (الدنيا) (٤) فأطغى، ولا تقل لي منها فأنسى، فإن ما قل وكفى خير مما كثر وألهى (٥).
It is narrated from a man named Mikaeel, who says that when Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand for prayer at night, he would say: Indeed, You are seeing my place and You know my need. So, O Allah! Return me to my place successful and with my supplication accepted from Your presence. Indeed, You have forgiven me and had mercy on me. And when Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would finish his prayer, he would say: O Allah! I do not see any permanence in anything of this world, and I do not see any stability in any state of this world. O Allah! Make me one who speaks with knowledge in this world, and make me one who remains silent in this world by Your command. O Allah! Do not increase the world for me so much that I become rebellious, and do not decrease it for me so much that I become forgetful. Surely, a little of the world that suffices is better than an abundance that makes one heedless.
Hadith 37213
٣٧٢١٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن داود عن عامر عن ابن عباس قال: دخلت على عمر حين طعن فقلت: أبشر بالجنة يا أمير المؤمنين أسلمت حين كفر الناس وجاهدت مع رسول اللَّه حين خذله الناس، وقبض رسول ⦗٣٢٠⦘ اللَّه (١) وهو عنك راض، ولم يختلف في خلافتك اثنان، وقتلت شهيدًا، فقال: أعد علي، فأعدت عليه فقال: والذي لا إله غيره، لو أن لي ما على الأرض من صفراء وبيضاء (لافتديت) (٢) به من هول المطلع (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was attacked, I went to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful! Receive glad tidings of Paradise. When other people disbelieved, you (may Allah be pleased with you) accepted Islam. When others were disgracing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you (may Allah be pleased with you) strove in jihad alongside him (peace and blessings be upon him). And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away in a state that he was pleased with you. And during your caliphate, not even two people have differed, and you are dying as a martyr. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Say this to me again. So I repeated it to him, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Him besides whom there is no deity, if I had gold and silver equal to what is on the earth, I would ransom myself with it from the terrors of the Day of Resurrection.
