Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Shamar bin Atiyyah says: Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said: Eat wild herbs, drink plain water, and depart from this world in peace.

Hazrat Abu Salih says: Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) said to his companions: Make the mosques your homes and your homes places of rest, and attain salvation from the world with peace, and eat wild vegetables. Abu Salih says: A’mash mentioned this narration with the addition of “drink plain water.”

Someone narrated this tradition to Hazrat Alaa bin Musayyib. He said: The helpers of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) asked him: What do you eat? He replied: Barley bread. They asked: What do you wear? He replied: Wool. They asked: What do you spread (to lie on)? He replied: The ground. They said: To adopt all these things is very difficult. He replied: You cannot attain honor in the heavens until you prefer these things over pleasure. Or he said: Over desires.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Yaqub says that Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said: Do not engage excessively in any speech except the remembrance of God, otherwise your hearts will become hardened. And hardened hearts are far from Allah Almighty, but you do not realize it. Do not look at the sins of people as if you are the Lord. Rather, look at your own sins as if you are a servant. Because people are in only two states: one, those who are afflicted with a trial, and the other, those who are in well-being. Therefore, have mercy on those who are afflicted and be grateful to Allah Almighty for well-being.

Hazrat Khaythamah says: A woman passed by Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him), and she said: Blessed is the womb that carried you, and the breasts that nursed you. So Isa (peace be upon him) replied: Rather, blessed is the person who recites the Qur'an and follows the commands contained in it.

Hazrat Salim says: Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) said: Fear Allah, and act for the sake of Allah, and do not act for your stomachs. Look at these birds, they do not farm, yet Allah provides them with sustenance. If you doubt that your stomachs are bigger than those of the birds (and therefore you must farm), then look at these cows, buffaloes, and donkeys; they also do not farm, yet Allah provides them with sustenance. Do not consider the world to be something great; indeed, it is filth in the sight of Allah.

Hazrat Khaythamah says: Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) said: Blessedness is for the children of the believer, blessedness is for them, that even after (the believer's passing away), (because of him) they are protected. After saying this, Khaythamah recited this verse: { وَکَانَ أَبُوہُمَا صَالِحًا } And their father was a righteous man (therefore their treasure was protected).

Hazrat Abu Thamamah says: The helpers (Ansar) of (Isa عليه السلام) said: O Isa (عليه السلام), what does it mean to make something sincere for Allah Almighty? He replied: It is for a person to act in such a way that he does not like anyone among the people to praise him for that action. And the one who is sincere for Allah Almighty is the person who, before engaging in fulfilling the rights of people, fulfills the right of Allah Almighty, and gives preference to the right of Allah Almighty over the rights of people. And when two tasks come before him, one for the benefit of this world and the other for the benefit of the Hereafter, he gives precedence to the task for the benefit of the Hereafter over the task for the benefit of this world.

Hazrat Thabit Banani says: A man said to Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him): Would it not be better if you acquired a donkey and traveled on it to fulfill your needs? He replied: I seek Allah Almighty’s protection from being granted anything that would make me heedless of Him.

Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid says: Before the leaders of the people of the mosques, a person narrated this to me. He said: I have received the news that Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) used to say: O Allah! My condition is such that I am not able to obtain what I desire for myself, nor do I have the power to remove from myself what I dislike. All wealth and possessions have gone to others, and whatever I have earned is also with me as a trust. In summary, no poor person is more needy than me. So do not test me in matters of my religion, and do not make the world my main objective, and do not impose over me anyone who will not have mercy on me.

Hazrat Khaythama narrates: Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) said to a wealthy man among his companions: Give your wealth in charity. That man disliked this statement. So Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) said: It will be very difficult for wealthy people to enter Paradise.

Hazrat Mujahid says: Hazrat Maryam, may Allah have mercy on her, said: When Isa and I were alone, we would talk to each other. And when any person diverted my attention away from him, he would begin to recite tasbih in my womb and I would be listening to it.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: The words of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) mentioned in the verses are the only words he spoke; apart from these, he did not say anything else until he reached the age of (other) speaking children.

Hazrat Salim says: Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said: Surely Musa forbade you from adultery, and I also forbid you from it. And I also forbid you from speaking evil among yourselves. For the one who speaks evil is like a person who strikes a beam with a spear; he does not break it, but he weakens and decays it. Or he is like smoke that fills a room; it does not burn it, but it makes it discolored and foul-smelling.

Hazrat Khallaf bin Houshab says: Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said to his helpers: O best people of the earth! Do not corrupt this (earth). Because whenever something becomes corrupt, it is reformed through the best thing. And know that there are two (undesirable) traits within you: (one is) laughing without reason, and (the other is) remaining asleep in the morning despite not staying awake at night.

Hazrat Maymun bin Astadh says: Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said: O group of Ansar, make the mosques your homes, and use your houses merely like guesthouses. In this world, you have no (permanent) abode; you are but travelers.

Hazrat Khaythamah says: Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) used to prepare food for his companions, then (during the meal, for the sake of arrangement) he would watch over them, and after they had eaten, he would say: Treat worshipful people in this manner.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi: Whenever the Day of Judgment was mentioned in the presence of Hazrat Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him), he would (involuntarily) cry out. And he would say: It is appropriate for the son of Maryam that when the Day of Judgment is mentioned before him, he should cry out (due to the severity of that moment). Or he said: It is appropriate for the son of Maryam that when the Day of Judgment is mentioned before him, he should remain silent (due to the severity of that moment).

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Al-Hazil says: When Yahya (peace be upon him) had the opportunity to meet Isa (peace be upon him), he requested him: Please advise me. He (Isa) advised: Do not get angry. He (Yahya) said: I do not have the ability to not get angry. He (Isa) said: Do not accumulate wealth. He (Yahya) said: I will do this.
