Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Iyad Ash'ari says that I participated in the Battle of Yarmouk. In it, we had five commanders: Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah, Hazrat Yazid bin Abi Sufyan, Hazrat Ibn Hasnah, Hazrat Khalid bin Walid, and Hazrat Iyad. And Hazrat Umar had said that when the battle takes place, you must obey Hazrat Abu Ubaidah. Then, in this battle, we were surrounded by severe dangers, so we sought help from Hazrat Umar. He replied in writing that your letter has reached me in which you have asked me for help. I advise you to seek help from Allah, whose help is most dominant and whose army is the strongest, and the Prophet ﷺ defeated the enemy in the Battle of Badr with fewer numbers than you. When this letter of mine reaches you, do not turn to me again. After receiving this letter, we fought bravely and defeated the enemy. We fought them for four farsakhs and obtained a lot of wealth. Then we consulted among ourselves about the distribution of the wealth, so Hazrat Iyad suggested that each person should be given ten. Then Hazrat Abu Ubaidah said, "Who will race with me?" A young man said, "If you are not displeased, I will race with you." Then that young man went ahead. The narrator says that I saw Hazrat Abu Ubaidah on his Arabian horse behind that young man, and the braids of his hair were flying.

Hazrat Qais narrates that during the Battle of Yarmouk, I saw a man who was ready to sacrifice his life, and his wife was trying to stop him by pleading with him. He was saying, "Take her away from me; I cannot stop for her at all." Hazrat Qais says that later we saw that he had been martyred in that battle.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that in the Battle of Yarmouk, no one's voice was louder than that of Abu Sufyan. He was standing under the flag of his son and saying, "This is one of the days of Allah. O Allah! Send down Your help."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Kufa and a man from Syria boasted to each other. The man from Kufa said, "We are the people of Qadisiyyah and such-and-such battles." The man from Syria said, "We are the people of Yarmouk and such-and-such battles."

Hazrat Suwaid bin Ghaflah narrates that when we returned from the battle of Yarmouk, Hazrat Umar came to welcome us. At that time, we were wearing clothes made of silk. Hazrat Umar ordered the people to throw stones at us. We said, "We do not know what news he has received about us?" Then we took off the silk clothes and said, "He disliked our appearance." Then when we went, he welcomed us and said, "Earlier you came in the appearance of the polytheists, and Allah Almighty did not like silk even for the people before you."

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that I participated in the Battle of Yarmouk. There, people found dates and grains, which they ate, and did not consider there to be any harm in it.

Hazrat Abu Ishaq narrates that when Ikrimah bin Abu Jahl accepted Islam and presented himself before the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Whatever methods I adopted to hinder people from the path of Allah, I will now adopt every such method in the path of Allah, and as much wealth as I spent to prevent people from the path of Allah, I will now spend the same amount in the path of Allah." In the Battle of Yarmouk, Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) dismounted from his ride and fought on foot with great bravery, and then he was martyred. There were more than seventy marks of spears, swords, and arrows on his body.
