Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely Allah Almighty has sent me with the sword before the Day of Judgment, and Allah Almighty has placed my sustenance under the shadow of my spear. And Allah Almighty has destined humiliation and disgrace for the one who opposes me. And whoever imitates a people, then he is among them.

This statement of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is also narrated from this chain by Hazrat Tawus, may Allah have mercy on him.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that whenever Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah have mercy on him) went on a campaign with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would keep a spear with him. When he returned, he would throw it away so that someone might pick it up thinking it belonged to him. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will certainly mention this matter before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, he said: Do not do so, because if you do, lost items will not be picked up.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah have mercy on him) intended to appoint Hazrat Bara bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader, but he (may Allah be pleased with him) refused, and Hazrat Bara bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Give me my sword, my shield, and my spear.

Hazrat Ismail bin Umayyah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Mak'hool (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A spear used to be taken along with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he (peace be upon him) could place it in front of him and perform prayer.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah have mercy on him) was sent as the governor of Basra, Hazrat Bara bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was also sent with him. And he was among his ministers. Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to him: "You should also choose some responsibility." Upon this, Hazrat Bara (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Will you give me the position that I ask from you?" He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes!" He said: "Indeed, I do not ask you for the position of overseeing the city or collecting taxes, but you give me my bow, my horse, my spear, and my sword, and let me go forth to strive in the path of Allah." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him as the commander over the army, and he was the first among them to be martyred.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely Allah, the Lord of Honor, has placed my sustenance under the shadow of my spear. And Allah, the Lord of Honor, has destined humiliation and disgrace for the one who opposes my command, and whoever imitates a people, he is one of them.
