Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Abi Najeeh (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the saying of Allah, the Lord of Might { مُسَوِّمِینَ }: that they were marked. That is, the tails of their horses were cut and there was wool on them.

Hazrat Ibn Aun (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umair bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: On the day of the Battle of Badr, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were told: Make some sign and mark for yourselves. Indeed, the angels have also put on a sign. He said: On that day, wool was used as a sign for the first time.

Hazrat Haritha bin Mudarrib Al-Abdi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of the Battle of Badr, the sign of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was white wool.

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Yahya bin Abbad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: On the day of the Battle of Badr, Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) had a yellow turban on his head, the end of which he had wrapped around his face. Then the angels descended in such a state that yellow turbans were also on their heads.

The aforementioned statement regarding Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) is also transmitted through this chain of narration.
