Hadith 34177
٣٤١٧٧ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن عاصم عن أبي عثمان أنه (كانت) (١) في يده قناة يمشي عليها، وكان يكثر أن يقول: واللَّه لو أشاء أن تنطق قناتي هذه لنطقت، لو كان عمر بن الخطاب ميزانًا ما كان فيه ميط شعرة.
Hazrat Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Abu Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) used to have a stick in his hand. With its help, he would walk and would often say: If Allah wills that my stick speaks, then it will surely speak. He (may Allah have mercy on him) says: If Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) were a scale, then not even the weight of a hair would there be any injustice.
Hadith 34178
٣٤١٧٨ - حدثنا معتمر بن سليمان عن أبيه قال: سمعت الحسن يقول: خطب عمر والمغيرة بن شعبة امرأة، فأنكحوا المغيرة وتركوا عمر (أو) (١) قال: ردوا عمر، قال: فقال نبي اللَّه ﷺ: "لقد تركوا أو ردوا خير هذه الأمة" (٢).
Sulaiman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I heard Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) say that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and Mughira ibn Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) both sent a marriage proposal to a woman. Her family married her to Mughira (may Allah be pleased with him) and left Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), or the narrator said: they rejected Umar’s (may Allah be pleased with him) proposal. Upon this, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: Indeed, they have left the best person of this Ummah, or he said: they have rejected him.
Hadith 34179
٣٤١٧٩ - حدثنا محمد بن مروان عن يونس قال: كان الحسن ربما ذكر عمر فقال: واللَّه ما كان بأولهم إسلامًا، ولا أفضلهم نفقة في سبيل اللَّه، ولكنه غلب الناس بالزهد في الدنيا والصرامة في أمر اللَّه، ولا يخاف في اللَّه لومة لائم.
Yunus, may Allah have mercy on him, says that whenever Hazrat Husain, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, he would say: By Allah, although he was not among the earliest to embrace Islam, nor was he among the most excellent in spending in the way of Allah, yet he surpassed people in his indifference to the world. And he was stern in matters of Allah’s religion. And he did not fear the blame of any blamer regarding Allah.
Hadith 34180
٣٤١٨٠ - حدثنا يحيى بن أبي بكير قال: ثنا شعبة عن قيس بن مسلم عن طارق ابن شهاب قال: عنا نتحدث أن السكينة تنزل على لسان عمر.
Hazrat Qais bin Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We used to say among ourselves that indeed tranquility and mercy descend upon the tongue of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 34181
٣٤١٨١ - حدثنا محمد بن بشر قال: ثنا محمد بن عمرو قال: ثنا أبو سلمة قال: قال سعد: أما واللَّه ما كان بأقدمنا إسلامًا، ولكن قد عرفتُ بأي شيء فضلنا: كان أزهدنا في الدنيا -يعني عمر بن الخطاب (١).
Hazrat Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Although he was not among us for long in terms of Islam, I found him superior to us in everything. He was the most indifferent to the world among us. That is, Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 34182
٣٤١٨٢ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن إسماعيل (عن) (١) زُبَيْد قال: لما حضرت أبا بكر الوفاة أرسل إلى عمر ليستخلفه قال: فقال الناس: (استخلف) (٢) علينا ⦗٣٥⦘ فظًا غليظًا، فلو ملكنا كان أفظ وأغلظ، ماذا تقول لربك إذا أتيته وقد (استخلفته) (٣) علينا قال: تخوفوني بربي! أقول: اللهم أمّرتُ عليهم خير أهلك (٤).
Ismail (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Zubaid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the time of the death of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a messenger to call Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he could appoint him as the caliph. So the people began to say: You (may Allah be pleased with you) will appoint a harsh-natured person as our caliph. If he becomes our ruler, he will become even harsher and more severe in temperament. What answer will you give to your Lord when you go to Him, that you appointed him as our caliph over us? He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Are you trying to make me fear my Lord?! I will answer: O Allah! I appointed the best of Your servants as a leader over them.
Hadith 34183
٣٤١٨٣ - حدثنا عبد اللَّه بن إدريس عن ليث عن معروف بن أبي معروف الموصلي قال: لما أصيب عمر سمعنا صوتا: (لبيك) (١) علي الإسلام من كان باكيا … فقد أوشكوا (هلكي) (٢) وما قدم العهد و (أدبرت) (٣) (الدنيا) (٤) وأدبر خيرها … وقد ملها من كان (يوقن) (٥) بالوعد
Hazrat Ma'ruf bin Abi Ma'ruf al-Mawsili, may Allah have mercy on him, says that when Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away, we heard a voice reciting these verses: Everyone who mourns for Islam should weep. It has come close to destruction. Not much time has passed. The world has ended and the best person of the world has departed. Today, the one who believed in his promises is distressed.
Hadith 34184
٣٤١٨٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن هارون بن أبي إبراهيم عن عبد اللَّه بن عبيد بن عمير قال: دخل ابن عباس على عمر حين طعن فقال له: يا أمير المؤمنين، إن كان إسلامك لنصرا، وإن (كانت) (١) إمارتك لفتحًا، واللَّه لقد ملأت الأرض عدلا حتى إن الرجلين ليتنازعان فينتهيان إلى أمرك، قال عمر: أجلسوني، فأجلسوه، قال: رد علي كلامك، قال: فرده عليه، قال: فتشهد لي بهذا الكلام (٢) يوم تلقاه؟ قال: نعم، قال: فسر ذلك عمر وفرح (٣).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Umair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck with a spear, Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to him and said: O Leader of the Believers! Indeed, your acceptance of Islam was a support for the Muslims, and your caliphate was a victory for the Muslims. By Allah! You filled the earth with justice and fairness, to the extent that if there was a dispute between two men, both would entrust their matter to you. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: People, seat me. So the people seated him. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Repeat your words to me. So Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) repeated his words. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will you bear witness to this on the Day when you meet your Lord? He replied: Yes! The narrator says: At this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased and became very happy.
Hadith 34185
٣٤١٨٥ - حدثنا وكيع عن سلمة بن وردان قال: سمعت أنسًا يقول: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ لأصحابه: "من شهد منكم جنازة؟ " قال عمر: أنا، قال: "من عاد منكم مريضًا؟ " قال عمر: أنا، قال: "من تصدق؟ " قال عمر: أنا، قال: "من أصبح منكم صائمًا؟ " قال عمر: أنا، قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "وجبت وجبت" (١).
Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "Who among you attended a funeral today?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I did." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who among you visited a sick person?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I did." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who gave charity?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I did." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who among you began the morning in a state of fasting?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I did." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise has become obligatory, Paradise has become obligatory."
Hadith 34186
٣٤١٨٦ - حدثنا محمد بن بشر (قال) (١): ثنا مسعر عن موسى بن أبي كثير عن مجاهد قال: مر عمر برسول اللَّه ﷺ وهو وعائشة وهما يأكلان حيسًا، فدعاه فوضع يده مع أيديهما، فأصابت يده يد عائشة، فقال: أوه، لو أطاع في هذه وصواحبها ما (رأتهن) (٢) أعين، قال: وذلك قبل (آية) (٣) الحجاب، قال: فنزلت آية الحجاب (٤).
Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was also with him. Both of them were eating halwa. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to join them. He (may Allah be pleased with him) put his hand along with their hands, and his hand touched the hand of Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Upon this, he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Oh! If my opinion regarding her and her companions had been accepted, then neither she nor her companions would have been seen by any eye." This incident occurred before the command of hijab was revealed. Then, upon this, the verse was revealed.
Hadith 34187
٣٤١٨٧ - حدثنا حاتم بن إسماعيل عن جعفر عن (أبيه) (١) قال: جاء علي إلى عمر وهو مسجى فقال: ما على وجه الأرض أحد أحب إلي أن ألقى اللَّه بصحيفته من هذا المسجى (٢).
Hazrat Ja'far, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that his father said: Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, while he was covered with a sheet. So he (Umar) said: There is no person on this earth who is more beloved to me than this covered person, such that I wish to meet Allah with his book of deeds.
Hadith 34188
٣٤١٨٨ - حدثنا جرير عن يعقوب عن جعفر عن سعيد بن جبير أن جبريل قال لرسول اللَّه ﷺ: (أقرئ) (١) عمر السلام وأخبره أن رضاه حكم وغضبه عز (٢).
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Convey greetings to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and inform him that indeed his approval is decisive and his anger is honorable.
Hadith 34189
٣٤١٨٩ - حدثنا أبو أسامة قال: أخبرنا الصلت بن بهرام عن سيار (أبي) (١) الحكم أن أبا بكر لما ثقل أطلع (رأسه) (٢) إلى الناس من كوة فقال: يا أيها الناس إني قد عهدت عهدًا، أفترضون به؟ فقام الناس فقالوا: قد رضينا، فقام علي فقال: لا نرضى إلا أن يكون عمر بن الخطاب، فكان عمر (٣).
Hazrat Salat bin Bahram, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Sayyar Abu al-Hakam, may Allah have mercy on him, said: When the illness of Hazrat Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, intensified, he turned towards the people from the skylight and began to say: O people! I have made a decision, are you pleased with it? Then the people stood up and said: We will not be satisfied except that it is Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. So it was Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.
Hadith 34190
٣٤١٩٠ - حدثنا (١) أبو داود (عمر) (٢) بن سعد عن سفيان عن منصور عن ربعي قال: سمعت حذيفة يقول: ما كان الإسلام في (زمان) (٣) عمر إلا كالرجل المقبل ما يزداد إلا قربًا، فلما قتل عمر كان كالرجل المدبر ما يزداد إلا بعدًا (٤).
Hazrat Rubay’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Hazrat Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: “Islam, in the time of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), was like a man who is being welcomed and whose welcome increases day by day. But when Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, it became like a man who is going backwards and getting farther away day by day.”
Hadith 34191
٣٤١٩١ - حدثنا أبو معاوية قال: ثنا الأعمش عن (شمر) (١) قال: لكأن علم الناس كان مدسوسا في جحر مع علم عمر.
Hazrat A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Shamir said: In comparison to the knowledge of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the knowledge of the people was like something hidden in a hole.
