Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ikrimah narrates from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The explanation of { لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَہُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِیًّا } is that before him, no one was given the name Yahya.

A similar narration is also reported from Mujahid.

Mahdi narrates from Ikrimah the meaning of { وَآتَیْنَاہُ الْحُکْمَ صَبِیًّا } that by this is meant intellect.

Mujahid narrates the meaning of { وَآتَیْنَاہُ الْحُکْمَ صَبِیًّا } that it refers to the Qur'an.

Mansur bin Safiyyah narrates from his mother: She said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) entered the mosque when Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) had been hung on the gallows. People began to say that Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) was present. He went to her, advised and counseled her, and said: "The body is nothing; rather, it is the souls that reach Allah. Therefore, be patient and hope for reward." She replied: "What could prevent me from being patient when the head of Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him) was given to a prostitute of the Children of Israel?"

Hazrat Urwah narrates that Hazrat Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him) was killed because of an adulterous woman, who said to her companion that she would not be pleased with him until he brought her his (Yahya's) head. It is said that he slaughtered him and brought his head to her in a tray.

It is narrated from Mujahid in the commentary of { لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَہُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِیًّا } that what is meant is a virtue like theirs.

Saeed bin Musayyib narrates from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Every person has either made a mistake or intended to make a mistake, except Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him). Then he recited { وَسَیِّدًا وَحَصُورًا } and then picked up something from the ground and said: They had nothing greater than this.

The meaning of { وَسَیِّدًا وَحَصُورًا } is narrated from Hazrat Saeed: "forbearing."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: Every person has either made a mistake or intended to make a mistake, except Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him).

It is narrated from Mujahid under { لَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَہُ مِنْ قَبْلُ سَمِیًّا } that its meaning is that none has been created like him.
