Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Mujahid says that Hazrat Maryam said that when I was in seclusion, Isa would talk to me and I would talk to him, and when any man would come before me, he would glorify Allah in my womb and I used to hear it.

Mujahid narrates through another chain from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: Jesus (peace be upon him) did not speak in his childhood except for those verses which Allah had commanded.

Hazrat Hilal bin Yasaf states that, apart from three children, no one spoke while in the cradle: Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him), the child who bore witness for Hazrat Yusuf (peace be upon him), and the child who bore witness for Jurayj.

Mujahid narrates from Hazrat Ibn Abbas regarding the interpretation of { وَإِنَّہُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَۃِ }, he said that it refers to the descent of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him).

Thabit bin Harmuz narrates from a Sheikh, from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the meaning of { لِیُظْہِرَہُ عَلَی الدِّینِ کُلِّہِ } is the descent of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him).

Saeed bin Jubair narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When Allah intended to raise Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) towards the heavens, he came to his disciples, who were twelve at that time, and drops of water were dripping from his head. He said: Some of you will disbelieve in me twelve times after having believed in me. Then he said: Who among you is ready that my likeness be cast upon him and he be killed in my place, and he will be with me in my rank? So a young man stood up and said: I am ready. Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) said: Sit down. Then he asked again, and the young man stood up again. He said: Sit down. He asked a third time, and the young man stood up and said: I am ready. He said: All right, it is you. So his likeness was cast upon him. It is said that Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) was raised towards the heavens from a window in the house, and the Jewish army came and arrested the one who resembled him and killed him, then crucified him. And one of them disbelieved in him twelve times. After that, they became three groups. One group said: Allah remained among us for a period, then ascended to the heavens; these are the Jacobites. Another group said: The son of Allah was among us, then Allah raised him up; these are the Nestorians. And one group said: The servant of Allah and His Messenger remained with us for a period, then Allah raised him up; these are the Muslims. So the disbelieving groups prevailed over the Muslims, and they fought them and killed them, and Islam was erased until Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah revealed the verse { فَآمَنَتْ طَائِفَۃٌ مِنْ بَنِی إسْرَائِیلَ } meaning: That group believed which was in the time of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him), and a group disbelieved, which was in the time of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him). “So We helped the believing group”—meaning those who believed in the time of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him)—“over their enemies by making the religion of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prevail over the religion of the disbelievers,” and they became dominant.

Hazrat Ubaid bin Umair narrates that Hazrat Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) would not save the evening meal for the morning, nor the morning meal for the evening, and he used to say that every day has its own sustenance. He wore clothes made of hair, ate the leaves of trees, and would sleep wherever evening fell.

Hazrat Khaythamah narrates that a woman passed by Hazrat Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him), and she said, "Glad tidings for the womb that bore you, and the breast that nursed you." Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) replied, "Glad tidings for the person who recited the Qur'an and acted upon what is in it."

Hazrat Muhammad bin Yaqub narrates that Hazrat Isa bin Maryam said: Do not speak of anything except the remembrance of Allah, for by doing so your hearts will become hardened, and hardened hearts are far from Allah. But you do not know. Do not look at the sins of the servants as if you are their Lord; rather, look at your own sins as if you are a servant. For people are of two kinds: those who are afflicted with trials, and those who are in well-being. Therefore, have mercy on those who are afflicted, and praise Allah for well-being.

Hazrat Abu Salih narrates in a marfu’ form from Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) that Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) said to his companions: Make the mosques your abode and consider your homes as waystations on the road, and attain salvation from the world with peace, and eat the vegetables of the villages. A’mash adds to this: Drink plain water.

Ala bin Musayyib narrates from a man that the disciples asked Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him), "What do you eat?" He replied, "Barley bread." They asked, "What do you wear?" He replied, "Wool." They asked, "What is your bedding?" He replied, "The ground." They said, "All this is very difficult." He replied, "You cannot attain the kingdom of the heavens and the earth until you refrain from using these things despite their pleasure," or he said, "despite their desire."

Hazrat Abu Husain narrates from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair regarding the interpretation of Allah’s command {إنَّکُمْ ، وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللہِ حَصَبُ جَہَنَّمَ أَنْتُمْ لَہَا وَارِدُونَ }, he said that he mentioned Hazrat Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Uzair, that they too were worshipped. Thus, after this, the verse was revealed: (إِنَّ الَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا الْحُسْنَى أُولَئِكَ عَنْهَا مُبْعَدُونَ). He said that by this is meant Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary), peace be upon him.
