Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I have never smelled musk, amber, or any fragrance better than the fragrance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I have never found pure amber or pure silk softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we returned from a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until when we reached the garden of Banu Najjar, there was a wild camel in it. Whoever entered the garden, it would attack him. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and called the camel. It came, dragging its jaw on the ground, and knelt down before him. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Bring a halter." He put the halter on it and handed it over to its owners. Then he turned to the people and said, "There is none between the heavens and the earth who does not know that I am the Messenger of Allah, except the disobedient among humans and jinn."

Hazrat Abdullah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I am free from the friendship of every friend, except that Allah has made your companion a friend. In Waki’s narration, it is “min khullah”.

Hazrat Abdullah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Some of Allah’s angels roam the earth and convey to me the greetings of my Ummah.

Hazrat Abdullah narrates that while we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and we did not have any water, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever has any leftover water, bring it." Water was brought to him, and he poured it into a vessel, then placed his hand in it, and water began to flow from his fingers. Then he said, "Come to the blessed pure water and the blessing from Allah." He says that we drank from it. Hazrat Abdullah says that while eating, we used to hear the glorification (tasbih) of the food.

Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we traveled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the time for prayer came. A man brought some leftover water in a vessel and poured it into a bowl. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it. Then people began to bring their leftover water for ablution and started saying, "Do masah, do masah (wipe over instead of washing)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard them and said, "Wait." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand in the water and said, "Perform complete ablution." Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "By Him who took away my eyesight, I saw water flowing from the fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He did not lift his hand until everyone had performed ablution." Aswad, the narrator, says, "I think I heard him say that we were two hundred or more."

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the time for prayer arrived and those who were near the mosque stood up and performed ablution, while some people remained. Then a stone vessel containing water was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed his hand in it; it was so small that he could not spread out his hand. He joined his fingers together, and all the people performed ablution. The narrator says that we asked how many people there were. He replied that there were eighty men.

Hazrat Bara narrates that when we camped on the day of Hudaybiyyah, we saw that those who had arrived earlier had already drunk all the water from the well. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat by the well and asked for a bucket. He took some water from it into his blessed mouth and then put it back into the bucket, and prayed to Allah. As a result, the water increased so much that everyone drank to their fill.

Hazrat Imran bin Husain narrates that we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when the people complained of thirst. The Prophet called so-and-so and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and said, "Go and search for water for us." So they went and found a woman who had two water skins or pitchers with her. They brought this woman to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked for a vessel and poured water from the mouths of the water skins or pitchers into it, then closed their mouths and let the rope hang loose. It was then announced among the people, "Take water and fill up." So whoever wanted to drink, drank, and whoever wanted to fill up, filled up, and the woman was standing and watching what was being done with her water. He says, "By Allah! She was left in such a state that we thought it was fuller than before." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "By Allah! We have not diminished anything from your water, rather Allah has given us to drink."

Hazrat Abdullah says that your Prophet was given everything except the keys to five things, { اِنَّ اللّٰہَ عِنْدَہٗ عِلْمُ السَّاعَۃِ وَ یُنَزِّلُ الْغَیْثَ وَ یَعْلَمُ مَا فِی الْاَرْحَامِ وَ مَا تَدْرِیْ نَفْسٌ مَّاذَا تَکْسِبُ غَدًا وَ مَا تَدْرِیْ نَفْسٌ بِاَیِّ اَرْضٍ تَمُوْتُ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ عَلِیْمٌ خَبِیْرٌ}. Translation: Surely, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah. He sends down the rain. He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I am the leader of the children of Adam, and the earth will split open first for me, and I will be the first to intercede and the first whose intercession will be accepted.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My this pulpit, I hope, will be one of the gardens of Paradise.

Hasan narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I am the foremost among the Arabs."

Hazrat Wathilah bin Asqa’ narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah chose Isma’il (peace be upon him) from the children of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and from the Quraysh He chose Banu Hashim, and from Banu Hashim He chose me.

Abu Sufyan narrates that Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Jibreel came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was sitting in grief; some people of Makkah had beaten him. He (Jibreel) asked, "What has happened to you?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "These people have treated me badly." He (Jibreel) said, "Would you like me to show you a sign?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes." So he (Jibreel) looked behind the valley and said to call that tree. The Prophet ﷺ called it, and it came walking until it stood before him. Then he (Jibreel) said, "Send it back," so it went back and returned to its place. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is enough for me, it is enough for me."

Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa narrates that Hazrat Abu Musa said: Abu Talib set out towards Syria and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went with him, along with some elders of the Quraysh. When they reached near the monk, they untied their saddlebags. The monk came to them, and before this, whenever they passed by him, he neither came out to them nor paid attention to them. So, while they were opening their saddlebags, he came through their midst and took hold of the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "This is the chief of the worlds, this is the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, Allah will send him as a mercy for all the worlds." The elders of the Quraysh asked him: "How do you know this?" He said: "When you ascended the pass, there was not a single stone or tree that did not fall in prostration, and these things do not prostrate except to a prophet."

Hazrat Umm Salamah narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said: The legs of my pulpit are fixed in Paradise.

Hazrat Abu Musa narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I have been granted comprehensive words and words that begin and words that conclude.

Shumr narrates that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying when wolves came behind him and started barking. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer with salam, he said that these wolves have come to you to inform you that you should prepare and give them something from your wealth, otherwise be prepared for them to attack you.

Humaid says that Anas was asked whether the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to raise his hands. He replied, "Yes!" One Friday, the people complained and said, "O Messenger of Allah! There is a drought, the land has dried up, and the livestock have perished." The Prophet raised his hands so high that I could see the whiteness of his armpits, and at that time there was not a single cloud in the sky. We had not yet finished the prayer when even a strong young man was anxious to reach home. He says that it rained upon us for a whole week until the next Friday. Then the people said, "O Messenger of Allah! The houses have collapsed and the riders are stranded." The narrator said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smiled at the quick weariness of the son of Adam and said, "O Allah! Let it rain around us and not upon us." He says that then the sky cleared.

Mugheeth bin Sammi narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A new Torah has been revealed to me in which there is the light of wisdom and the sources of knowledge, so that through it Allah may open blind eyes, closed hearts, and deaf ears, and it is the very last book of the Most Merciful.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I asked Allah for intercession for my Ummah, so Allah said: For you there are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning. I said: O my Lord! Increase it for me! He said: For you, with every seventy thousand, there are seventy thousand more. I said: And increase it for me! He said: For you, there are so many and so many and so many more. Abu Bakr said: That is enough for us. Hazrat Umar said: O Abu Bakr! Leave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, (to continue). Hazrat Abu Bakr said: O Umar! We are but a handful of Allah.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Aqeel narrates that we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as a delegation. One of us said, "O Messenger of Allah! Did you not ask your Lord for a kingdom like that of Solomon (peace be upon him)?" He smiled and said, "Perhaps your companion is greater with Allah than the kingdom of Solomon (peace be upon him). Indeed, Allah has not sent any prophet except that He granted him a supplication. Some chose the world, so Allah granted it to them, and some used it as a curse against their people when they disobeyed, so they were destroyed. And Allah granted me a supplication, so I have stored it with my Lord for the intercession of my Ummah."

It is narrated from Hazrat Rifa’ah Juhani that he said: We returned with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: My Lord has promised me that He will admit seventy thousand from my Ummah into Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Intercession has been granted to me, and it will reach every person from my Ummah who did not associate anyone with Allah."

Hazrat Ubayy narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said to me: O Ubayy! My Lord has revealed to me to recite the Qur'an on one mode (harf). I submitted: Make it easy for my ummah. Allah said: Recite the Qur'an on seven modes (ahruf), and for each time you ask, you have a supplication. The Prophet ﷺ said: O Allah! Forgive my ummah. O Allah! Forgive my ummah. And I have postponed the third supplication for the Day when the creation will turn towards me, even Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Sila narrates that Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that people will be gathered in a plain field, their sight will be sharp, and they will hear the caller’s call. Then a caller will call out before the first and the last, “O Muhammad!” You (peace and blessings be upon him) will say, “Labbaik wa Sa’daik, all goodness is in Your hands, the guided one is he whom You guide, You are blessed and exalted, and from You is what is given and to You is what returns, there is no refuge or place of safety from You except with You, You are pure, Owner of the House of Allah. O our Lord, You are blessed and exalted.” Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that this is the Maqam-e-Mahmood (the Praised Station).

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding the explanation of Allah's command { عَسَی أَنْ یَبْعَثَک رَبُّک مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا } that it refers to intercession.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a woman brought her son to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah! My son is afflicted with madness, and it overcomes him at noon and in the evening, and he performs bad actions." It is said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed his hand over his chest and prayed. The boy vomited, and from his stomach came out a living creature in the shape of a large black rat.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ used to deliver sermons while leaning against a date-palm trunk. When he had a pulpit made, he moved towards it, so the trunk began to weep until the Prophet ﷺ held it and embraced it, then it became calm. The Prophet ﷺ said that if I had not embraced it, it would have continued to weep until the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Hazim narrates that people came to Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’d and asked, “What was the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made of?” He replied, “No one remains who knows more about it than I do.” He said, “It was made from the wood of the jungle tamarisk tree, and it was prepared for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) by such-and-such person, the freed slave of such-and-such woman. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to lean against a pillar of the mosque, and when he delivered the sermon, he would turn towards it and pray. When the pulpit was prepared and he sat on it, that pillar began to weep. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to it and placed it in the ground until it became calm. And in Abu Hazim’s narration, the words ‘fa-watadahu’ (he fixed it) are not present.”

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon while leaning against the trunk of a date-palm tree. So, an Ansari woman said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have a slave carpenter; should I not order him to make a pulpit for you?" He replied, "Why not?" So she had a pulpit made. When Friday came, the Prophet delivered the sermon from the pulpit. The trunk which he used to lean against began to weep like a child. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that it began to weep because the remembrance (dhikr) had ceased to be made near it.

Hazrat Abu Saeed narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to deliver sermons while leaning against a date-palm trunk. Then a Roman man came to him and said, "Shall I make a pulpit for you on which you can stand and deliver sermons?" So he made this pulpit for him which you see. When he (the Prophet) stood on it and delivered the sermon, the trunk began to weep like a she-camel weeps for its young. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came down and went to it, and embraced it to his chest, and it became quiet. Then he ordered for a place to be dug for it and for it to be buried there.

Hazrat Anas narrates from the Prophet ﷺ in the same manner as the previous narration of Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Hazrat Awf bin Malik Ashja'i narrates that one night the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed with us, so each of us placed a pillow on the front leg of his mount. I woke up during a part of the night and saw that there was no one in front of the camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So I set out to search for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and found Mu'adh bin Jabal and Abdullah bin Qais standing. I asked, "Where is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" They replied, "We have no knowledge except that we heard a sound from the upper side of the valley, and it sounded like the noise of a water mill." We had only walked a little when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and said, "Tonight, a messenger from my Lord came to me, and he gave me the choice between half of my Ummah entering Paradise and intercession. I chose intercession." We said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we beseech you by Allah and by your companionship to include us among your people of intercession." He said, "You are among the partners of my intercession." He says, "We quickly went to the people, and they were anxious and searching for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, 'Tonight, a messenger from my Lord came to me, and he gave me the choice between half of my Ummah entering Paradise and my intercession. I chose intercession.' The people said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we beseech you by Allah and by your companionship to include us among your people of intercession.' He said, 'I make all those present witnesses that my intercession will be for every member of my Ummah who dies without associating anything with Allah.'"

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me while I was driving my camel and was behind all the people, and my camel was lame or sick. He said, "What is the matter with it?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah! It is lame or sick." He took something that was in his hand and struck it, then said, "Mount it." So I would hold it back so that the people could catch up with me.

Hazrat Ya’la (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Murrah narrates: I saw three signs of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which no one before me saw, nor will anyone after me see. I set out with him on a journey until we passed by a woman who had a child with her. She said, “O Messenger of Allah! My son has been afflicted by a calamity.” He said, “Give him to me.” She handed the child to you. You placed him between yourself and the middle part of the saddle. Then you opened his mouth and blew into it three times, saying, “Bismillah, ana ‘Abdullah, ikhsa’ ‘aduwwallah” (In the name of Allah, I am the servant of Allah, be disgraced, enemy of Allah). Then you gave the child back to her and said, “Meet us at this place on our return and tell us what happened.” He says: We went and then returned, and saw the woman at that place, and she had many goats with her. You said, “What happened to your child?” She said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, we have not noticed anything about him until now.” You took those goats and said, “Dismount and take one goat, and return the rest.” He says: One day I went out with you to the open field until, when we had gone far, you said, “Look, do you see anything that could conceal me?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I see nothing that could conceal you except a tree, but it cannot conceal you.” You said, “Is there anything near it?” I said, “Behind it is another tree, about the same size or close to it.” You said, “Go to both of them and say: The Messenger of Allah commands you, by Allah’s order, to come together.” He says: The two trees came together, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself. Then he returned and said, “Go to them and say: The Messenger of Allah commands you both to return each to your place.” He says: One day I was sitting with you when a camel came, crying, and sat in front of you. Then tears began to flow from its eyes. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “See, whose camel is this? Its condition is bad.” He says: I went out to find its owner and found that the camel belonged to a man from the Ansar. I called him to you. You said, “What is the story of your camel?” He said, “By Allah, I do not know what its condition is, except that we worked it and made it carry water until it became unable to carry water. Then in the evening we decided to slaughter it and distribute its meat.” You said, “Do not do so. Give it to me as a gift or sell it to me.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! It is yours.” You marked it as charity and then let it go.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that I set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would not go to relieve himself until he had gone so far that he could no longer be seen. So we stopped in a barren plain in which there was neither a tree nor a mound. He said, "O Jabir! Pour water into your vessel, then come with us." He says, "We went until we were no longer visible. There he saw two trees between which there was a distance of four arm-lengths. He said, 'O Jabir! Go to this tree and say to it that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commands you to join with your companion tree so that I may sit behind you.' So the tree joined with the other, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat behind them. Then they returned to their places." (2)

"Then we mounted and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was among us, as if birds were shading us over our heads. Then we encountered a woman who had her child with her. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Every day, several times, a devil seizes my son.' He stopped for her, took the child, and placed him between himself and the front part of the saddle. Then he said, 'O enemy of Allah! Go away, for I am the Messenger of Allah.' He said this three times, then gave the child back to the woman. When we returned from that journey and passed by that place, the woman came before us and she had two rams which she was driving. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah, please accept these from me. By the One Who sent you with the truth, the devil has not come to him again.' He said, 'Take one from her and return the other.'" (3)

He says, "Then we went on and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was among us, in such a way that it was as if birds were shading us over our heads. Suddenly, a camel came running between two rows and fell down in prostration. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat down and said, 'O people! Who is the owner of this camel?' It was found that it belonged to some young men of the Ansar. They said, 'O Messenger of Allah! It is ours.' He said, 'What is its condition?' They said, 'We have made it draw water for twenty years, and it has some fat, so we want to slaughter it and distribute it among our slaves, but it escaped from us.' He said, 'Do you want to sell it?' They said, 'No, rather, O Messenger of Allah, it is a gift for you.' He said, 'If you do not wish to sell it, then treat it well until its death comes.'"

Hazrat Umm Jundub narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on the Day of Sacrifice, stoning the Jamrat al-Aqabah from the bottom of the valley while he was on his mount. Then he turned, and a woman from the tribe of Khath’am followed behind him. She had a child with her who was afflicted with something, and she said, “O Messenger of Allah! This is my son and my heir, and he has an affliction because of which he does not speak.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Bring me a little water.” Water was brought to him, so he washed his hands and rinsed his mouth, and then gave the water to her, and said, “Make him drink from it and sprinkle it on him, and ask Allah for his cure.” She says, I met a woman and asked her, “If you could give me a little of that water, how would it be?” She replied, “This is for the afflicted one.” Then, after a year, I met the woman and asked her about the boy, and she said, “He has recovered and become so intelligent that ordinary people are not as intelligent as he is.”

Hazrat Abdullah bin Ja'far narrates that one day the Prophet ﷺ made me ride behind him and confided a secret to me which I will not disclose to anyone, and it was your preference that for relieving yourself, a mound or a cluster of date-palm trees would conceal you. Once, you entered a grove of the Ansar's trees and saw a camel there. When the camel saw you, it knelt down and its eyes began to flow with tears. So the Prophet ﷺ passed his hand over its back and neck, and it became calm. You asked, "Whose camel is this?" or you said, "Who is the owner of this camel?" An Ansari said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! It is mine." You said, "Treat it well, for it has complained to me that you keep it hungry and always burden it with work."
