Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Huzail bin Shurahbeel narrates that a man came to Abu Musa and Sulaiman bin Rabee’ah and asked them about the shares of a daughter, a granddaughter, and a full sister. Both of them said that the daughter gets half of the estate and the remainder is for the sister, and they told him to go to Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), for he would support their opinion. The narrator says that the man went to Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this issue, and informed him of what the two had said. He replied: If I support them, then I would be misguided and not among those who hold the correct opinion in this matter. Rather, I will give the ruling that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave: the daughter gets half of the estate, the granddaughter gets one-sixth to complete two-thirds, and the remainder is for the sister.

Huzail narrates that Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a ruling regarding the daughter, granddaughter, and sister, in which he gave the daughter half of the wealth, the granddaughter one-sixth, to complete two-thirds, and the remainder to the sister. Abu Bakr says this issue will be solved with the number 6: three shares for the daughter, one share for the granddaughter, and two shares for the sister.
