Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to his sons: Whoever among you intends to marry, we will arrange his marriage. Because none among you who commits adultery will do so except that Allah will take away the light of faith from him. Then if He wills to return it, He will return it, and if He wills to withhold it, He will withhold faith from him.

Hazrat Ibn Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that his father, Hazrat Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him), said: I am astonished at our Iraqi brothers that they consider Hajjaj bin Yusuf to be a believer!

Hazrat Ajlah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I bear witness that he believes in the devils and disbelieves in Allah. That is, Hajjaj bin Yusuf.

Hazrat Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A time will come upon the people when they will gather and offer prayers in the mosques, while there will not be a single believer among them.

Hazrat Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that we requested Hazrat Talq bin Habib (may Allah have mercy on him): Please explain to us the definition of Taqwa. So he (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Taqwa is to act according to the pleasure of Allah, hoping for the mercy of Allah, upon the light of insight from Allah. And Taqwa is to abstain from disobedience to Allah, fearing Allah, upon the light of insight from Allah.

Hazrat Mansur (may Allah have mercy on him) says that whenever the name of Hajjaj bin Yusuf was mentioned in front of Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), he (may Allah have mercy on him) would say: Beware, the curse of Allah is upon the oppressors.

Hazrat Mansur (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: For the person who doubts about Hajjaj, this punishment is enough: that Allah distances him from His mercy.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is not a believer who spends the night with a full stomach while his neighbor is hungry.

Hazrat Talq bin Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There are three qualities, whoever possesses them has tasted the flavor and sweetness of faith. They are: that the love of Allah and His Messenger is dearer to him than all worldly things, that he loves someone for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, and that he harbors enmity for someone for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) was also mentioned.

Hazrat Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was stabbed with a spear. Both of them said: The time for prayer. So Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That person has no share in Islam who neglects the prayer. Then he performed the prayer in such a state that blood was flowing from his wound.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say to his companions: Come with us so that we may increase our faith.

Hazrat Aswad bin Hilal al-Muharibi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Sit with us so that we may discuss faith for a while, that is, so that we may remember Allah.

Hazrat Muawiyah bin Qurrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) used to supplicate as follows: O Allah! I ask You for everlasting faith, beneficial knowledge, and the straight path. Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Thus, we understood! Indeed, there is such faith that does not remain forever, and there is such knowledge that does not benefit, and there is such a path that is not straight.

Hazrat Aswad bin Hilal, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Muadh, may Allah be pleased with him, would say to one of his companions: Sit with us so that we may discuss faith for a while. Then both of them would sit and mention Allah and praise and glorify Him.

Hazrat Zir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those people who would take the hand of one or two of his companions and say: Come with us, let us increase in faith.

Hazrat Tariq bin Shihab Al-Ahmasi, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Indeed, the example of the five prayers is like the attainment of war booty. So, the one who takes five shares from it is better than the one who takes four shares from it. And the one who takes four shares from it is better than the one who takes three shares from it. And the one who takes three shares from it is better than the one who takes two shares from it. And the one who takes two shares from it is better than the one who takes one share from it. And may Allah not make the one who has only one share in Islam like the one who has no share at all.

Hazrat Abu Zar'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Faith is a light, so when a person commits adultery, faith departs from him. Then, if the person reproaches himself and turns towards Allah, faith returns to him.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the believers, those who have the most perfect faith are those who are best in character.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the believers, those with the most perfect and superior faith are those who have the best character among them.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the believers, the ones with the most perfect faith are those who have the best character.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among the believers, those who have the most perfect faith are the ones with the best character.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Indeed, modesty and faith have been joined together. So when one of them is taken away, the other is also taken away.

Hazrat Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a person said to Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him): "Surely, I am a believer." He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Say it like this! Surely, I am among the people of Paradise?!" And he further said: "But we believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers."

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked, "Are you a believer?" He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied, "I hope so."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Asma (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: If Allah wills, then you are believers.

Hazrat Ata bin As-Saib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When any one of you is asked: "Are you a believer?" then he should never doubt.

Hazrat Ziyad bin Alaqah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When any one of you is asked: "Are you a believer?" then he should never doubt his faith.

Hazrat Abu Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "I am a believer."

Hazrat A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came and said: I met a few horsemen, so I asked them: Who are you people? They replied: We are believers. He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Why did they not just say: We are in Paradise!

Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when Hazrat Mahal and Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on them) were asked about faith, they would say: We have believed in Allah, and in His angels, and in His books, and in His messengers.

Hazrat Shaibani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I met Hazrat Abdullah bin Ma’qil (may Allah have mercy on him), so I said to him: Some religious people criticize me for saying: I am a believer. Upon my saying this, Hazrat Abdullah bin Ma’qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, you are unsuccessful and deprived if you are not a believer.

Hazrat Suwar bin Shabib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: There are some people here who testify to disbelief against me. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why don’t you say: There is no deity except Allah. In this way, refute them.

Hazrat Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid Al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Call yourselves by those names with which Allah has named you: Hanifi, Muslim, and Momin (Believer).

Hazrat Salamah bin Sabrah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us and said: You are believers and you are destined for Paradise.

Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote a letter to us in which he said: After praise and salutations, surely the strength of religion and the foundation of Islam is faith in Allah, adherence to prayers, and giving of zakat. Therefore, you should offer prayers at their prescribed times.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person will come out of Hell who has recited this Kalimah: There is no god but Allah, and in whose heart there is goodness equal to a grain of barley. Then he said a second time: And a person will come out of Hell who has recited this Kalimah: There is no god but Allah, and in whose heart there is goodness equal to the weight of a grain of wheat. Then he said: A person will also come out of Hell who has recited this Kalimah: There is no god but Allah, in such a state that in his heart there is goodness equal to the weight of a particle.

Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a group came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) gave wealth to all except one man among them. So Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! You gave to everyone and left out so-and-so. By Allah! I consider him a believer. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Or do you consider him a Muslim? So Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I consider him a believer. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Or do you consider him a Muslim? Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said this three times.

Hazrat Abu Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It will be said to him: Ask, you will be granted. That is, to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Intercede, your intercession will be accepted. Pray, it will be accepted. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will raise his head and say two or three times: My Lord! My Ummah, my Ummah! Then Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will intercede for every person in whose heart there is faith equal to a grain of wheat, or he said: equal to a grain of barley, or he said: equal to a mustard seed. Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is the Praised Station for you.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When an adulterer commits adultery, his faith does not remain; and when a thief steals, his faith does not remain; and when a person drinks alcohol, his faith does not remain; and when a robber commits robbery while people are watching him, his faith does not remain.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: When an adulterer commits adultery, his faith does not remain; and when a thief steals, his faith does not remain; and when a person drinks alcohol, his faith does not remain. So beware (of these sins).
