The Example of One Who Combines Faith and the Qur'an
Hadith 32172
٣٢١٧٢ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحاق عن الحارث عن علي قال: مثل الذي جمع الإيمان وجمع القرآن مثل الأترجة الطيبة الطعم، ⦗٤٦٥⦘ ومثل الذي لم يجمع الإيمان ولم يجمع القرآن مثل الحنظلة خبيثة الطعم (و) (١) خبيثة الريح (٢).
Hazrat Harith narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The example of a person who combines faith and the Qur'an is like that of a citron; its fragrance is pleasant and its taste is delicious. And the example of a person who neither combines faith nor the Qur'an is like the colocynth fruit, which is tasteless and foul-smelling.
Hadith 32173
٣٢١٧٣ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا همام قال: حدثنا قتادة عن أنس أن أبا موسى حدثه عن النبي ﷺ قال: "مثل المؤمن الذي لا يقرأ القرآن كمثل التمرة طعمها طيب ولا ريح لها، ومثل المؤمن الذي يقرأ القرآن كمثل الأترجة طيبة الطعم طيبة الريح، ومثل الفاجر الذي لا يقرأ القرآن كمثل الحنظلة طعمها مر ولا ريح لها" (١).
Hazrat Abu Musa narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of a believer who does not recite the Noble Qur'an is like a date, whose taste is sweet but it has no fragrance; and the example of a believer who recites the Noble Qur'an is like a citron, whose taste is delicious and its fragrance is also excellent. And the example of a sinner who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth fruit, whose taste is bitter and its fragrance is not good either.
