Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that I asked Hazrat Ubaidah about a verse of the Book of Allah. He replied: It is obligatory upon you to fear Allah and to be upright, for indeed those people have passed away who knew regarding what the Qur'an was revealed.

Hazrat Amr bin Murrah narrates that a man asked Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib about a verse of the Qur'an. He replied: Do not ask me about the Qur'an, rather ask the one who claims that nothing of the Qur'an is hidden from him, that is, Hazrat Ikrimah.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Whoever gives an opinion about the Qur'an without knowledge, then he should prepare his abode in Hell.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim disliked expressing personal opinions about the Qur'an.

Imam Sha’bi says: I found the students of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in such a state that, to them, explaining the interpretation of the Qur’an was the most disliked thing in knowledge. Sha’bi said: And Hazrat Abu Bakr used to say: Which sky will give me shade, and which earth will give me shelter, if I say something about the Qur’an of which I have no knowledge?!

Hazrat Abdullah bin Habib bin Abi Thabit says: I asked Hazrat Tawus about the explanation of this verse: "The rule of testimony among you when death approaches one of you," so he intended to attack until it was said to him: "This is Ibn Habib." Because he disliked explaining the interpretation of the Qur'an.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Umar recited a verse on the pulpit. (And fruits and herbage). Then he said: We know what fruits are. So what is abban? Then turning to himself, he said: O Umar! Surely this is unnecessary affectation!

Hazrat Jabir narrates that Hazrat Amir said: A man wrote the Qur'an and wrote its commentary with every verse. Then Hazrat Umar had it brought to him. Then he cut it with scissors.

Hazrat Ibrahim al-Taimi narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr was asked about this verse (and fruits and fodder). He replied: Which sky will give me shade? And which earth will give me shelter, if I say anything about the Book of Allah of which I have no knowledge?!

Hazrat A'mash says that when Hazrat Abu Wa'il was asked about any verse of the Qur'an, he would say: Allah is on the side of truth, whoever He wills.
