Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the deceased was lowered into the grave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these words: With the name of Allah, and especially with Allah, and upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you lower your deceased into the grave, recite these words: In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The previous hadith from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is also narrated with this chain of transmission.

Hazrat Abu Mudrik says that when the deceased is placed in the grave, and Hazrat Abu Al-Ahwas says that when soil is poured over him, Hazrat Umar would supplicate as follows: O Allah! This person has entrusted his wealth, family, tribe, and major sins to You. So forgive him.

Hazrat Khaythamah says that the Companions liked that when the deceased was lowered into the grave, they would say: With the name of Allah, and in the way of Allah, and upon the method of the Messenger of Allah. O Allah! Protect him from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hell, and from the evil of Satan.

Hazrat Laith says that Hazrat Mujahid used to recite these words: With the name of Allah, and in the way of Allah, and upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). O Allah! Expand his grave, and fill his grave with light, and unite him with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in such a state that You are pleased with him and not displeased.

Hazrat Alaa bin Al-Musayyib narrates from his father that when you lower the deceased into the grave, do not say, "With the name of Allah," but rather say: "In the way of Allah and upon the way of Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon the way of Ibrahim, who was a true Muslim and was not among the polytheists. O Allah! Grant him steadfastness in the Hereafter through the word of truth. O Allah! Grant him a better state than the one he was in. O Allah! Do not deprive us of his reward, and do not put us to trial after him." And he said that this verse was revealed regarding the person in the grave: "Allah keeps the believers firm with the word of truth in the worldly life and in the Hereafter."

Hazrat Asim narrates that when Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would lie down to sleep, he would recite these words: "In the name of Allah, and upon the way of Allah, and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)," and he would recite these same words when a person was placed in the grave.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim said: When you lower the deceased into the grave, recite these words! In the name of Allah, and upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Hazrat Jubair bin Adi narrates that I have been informed that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite this supplication when a deceased person was placed in the grave: In the name of Allah! And upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and with affirmation of Your Book and Your Messenger, and with certainty in resurrection after death. O Allah! Widen his grave for him and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.

Hazrat Husain narrates that Ibrahim al-Taimi said: When the deceased is lowered into the grave, recite these words! In the name of Allah, and towards Allah, and upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
