Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Umamah narrates that when Hazrat Umar bin Khattab wore new clothes, he recited this supplication: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with garments by which I cover my private parts and with which I adorn myself in my life. Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever wears new clothes and recites this supplication: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with garments by which I cover my private parts and with which I adorn myself in my life, and then gives away his old clothes, which he has torn or, as he said, set aside, as charity, then he will remain under Allah’s protection, support, and concealment in his life and after his death. The Prophet said this three times.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you wears new clothes, he should supplicate as follows: Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with such garments with which I cover my private parts and obtain adornment in my life.

A man from the tribe of Muzainah narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Umar wearing washed clothes, so he said: Are these clothes of yours new? Umar replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they are washed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wear new clothes, live a life of gratitude, and die as a martyr. May Allah grant you the coolness of the eyes in this world and the Hereafter.

Hazrat Mansur narrates that Hazrat Salim bin Abi Al-Ja'd said: When a person wears new clothes and recites this supplication: O Allah! Make these clothes blessed. Let me wear them in gratitude for Your blessings. Let me treat Your servants well while wearing them. Let me act in obedience to You while wearing them. Before this supplication even reaches his throat, Allah Almighty forgives him.

Hazrat Mas'ar narrates that Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah said: When a person wears new clothes and thanks Allah, he will be admitted to Paradise, or he said: his sins will be forgiven. So a man said to him: I will not return to my family until I wear new clothes and thank Allah for them.

Hazrat Abu Nadrah says that when the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw someone wearing new clothes, they would pray in this way: Wear and tear, may Allah grant you more.

Hazrat Abu Nadrah narrates that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wore a new garment, he would mention its name—whether it was a shirt, a lower garment, or a turban—and would recite this supplication: O Allah! All praise is for You, for You have clothed me with this garment. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made.
