Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the new moon, he would supplicate as follows: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, all praise is for Allah, there is no power to avoid sins and no strength to do good except by Allah's help. O Allah! I ask You for the goodness of this month, and I seek Your protection from the evil of destiny, and I seek Your protection from the evil of the Day of Gathering.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Harmalah narrates that I was returning with Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib, so we said: O Abu Muhammad! This is the new moon. When he saw it, he said: I believe in the One who created you, then made you balanced and made you perfect. Then, turning towards me, he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the new moon, he used to supplicate in this manner.

Hazrat Ubaidah narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When any one of you sees the new moon, he should not raise his head towards it. It is sufficient for each of you to say: My Lord and your Lord is Allah.

Hazrat Ubaidah narrates that when Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the new moon, he used to say: O Allah! Grant us its goodness, its help, its blessing, its victory, and its light, and we seek Your protection from its evil and from the evil of that which comes after it.

Hazrat Mujahid says that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) considered it disliked to stand up specifically for sighting the new moon. But when it became visible in front of him, he would recite these words: Allah is the Greatest, all praise is for Allah who took the moon away like this and like that, and brought the moon like this and like that.

Hazrat Qatadah narrates that when the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw the new moon, he would say three times: "A moon of goodness and guidance, a moon of guidance and goodness, and a moon of goodness and guidance." I have faith in the One who created you. Then he would recite: "All praise is for Allah who took the moon away in such and such a way, and brought the moon in such and such a way."

Hazrat Husain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked Hazrat Hisham bin Hassan: When Hazrat Hasan would see the new moon, which supplication would he recite? He replied: He would recite this supplication! O Allah! Make this month a month of blessing and light, and a month of reward and forgiveness. O Allah, You are the One who distributes goodness among Your servants, so distribute for us also from that goodness which You have distributed among Your righteous servants.

Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked Hazrat Ibn Jurayj (about the new moon), so he narrated from Hazrat Ata: Indeed, a man saw the new moon in a barren land. He stated that I heard someone saying these words: O Allah! Bring forth this moon upon us with safety and faith, and with peace and Islam, and with guidance and forgiveness, and with the ability to do every deed that pleases You, and with protection from every deed that displeases You. O moon, your Lord and mine is Allah. That man says: He kept reciting these words until I memorized them, and I did not see anyone else there.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim liked that when a person saw the new moon, he should recite these words: O moon, your Lord and my Lord is Allah.
