Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) started from the Safa hill and ascended it until he could see the Ka'bah. He proclaimed the oneness of Allah and recited the takbeer. And he recited these words: "There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things. There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and He alone defeated all the groups." Then he supplicated between the two (Safa and Marwah) and recited these words three times in the same manner. Then he proceeded to the Marwah hill, and on Marwah he did as he had done on Safa.

Hazrat Wahb bin Al-Ajda’ narrates that I heard Hazrat Umar saying: When you stand on the Safa hill, say Takbeer seven times, and between every two Takbeers, praise and glorify Allah, send blessings upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and pray for yourself. Do the same on the Marwah hill.

Hazrat Wahb bin Al-Ajda’ narrates that I heard Hazrat Umar saying: The beginning will be made from the Safa hill, and first, face towards the House of Allah (Ka’bah), then say Takbeer seven times, and between every two Takbeers, praise and glorify Allah, send blessings upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and supplicate for yourself. And the same will be done at the Marwah hill.

Hazrat Nafi’ reports that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he would ascend the Safa hill, he would face the Ka’bah, then say takbeer three times, then recite these words: There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is powerful over everything, and he would raise his voice with these words. Then he would supplicate for a while, then do the same on the Marwah hill, continuing in this manner for seven rounds, so that the number of takbeers would become twenty-one. Even though we were young, we would become very tired near the end.

Hazrat Qasim bin Abi Ayyub narrates that Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair used to say: A person will stand on the hills of Safa and Marwah for the duration it takes the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to recite a surah.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Hazrat Hakam said to Ibrahim that I saw Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman bin Harith on the Safa hill, and he stood (in prayer) for as long as it takes to recite one hundred and twenty verses: so Ibrahim said! Indeed, he is a jurist.
